Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 reconfiguration

Created: 09 Jan 2013 | 13 comments

Dear guys,

We have problem with our one of client's backup system. They have HP Autoloader and symantec 12.5.

I can able to run daily jobs fine, but weekly jobs/monthly jobs getting failed or going to queue status long time.

I couldnt find out the issue. i just want to reconfigure completely new, but in symantec guide it was very lengthy story and very difficult to understand the complete instruction.

Can anyone help to reconfigure easily step by step?

Im expecting all of your support.

Thanks,

Bathusha.

I think you should just delete and re-create the problem jobs first.

What do you have in mind when you say re-configuration?

Hi,

Reconfigure how?

If it is just the jobs, then do the following:

1. Create a new selection list

2. Create a new policy/jobs and assign them to the selection list

Run the backup. It is that simple. Once the backups complete, delete the old selection list/s and job/s.

Thanks!

guys thanks for your reply, im a technical person. But to be honest i dont have any experience with symantec backup exec. I tried with new job by testing, if im setting low files to backup it was working fine. if im setting more files (more than 500GB) it was going to queue state.

I already learned to create new selection list, Now i want to know how to label (all catridges pre labled), how to set them for daily weekly monthly selection list. in the magazine, whether we can keep anywhere any cartridge or in specified place only?

Thanks for your further support.

Go to a tape, right-click it and choose the option to Label the media.

If your jobs are queuing, right-click the job and choose: Respond to Alert. Sounds like you are running out of space when writing, so make sure you have a tape that is appendable/overwritable available!

The queue state could be due to BE enumerating the files/taking snapshots, etc.  This is normal, except when it takes a couple of hours.

As for media management, do read the Media Management section of the Admin Guide which can be found in the BE installation directory.

For tapes, it does not matter which slots they are in.  The management is done using media sets.

For example in the existing configuration i have a cartridge WU6969L3 in robotic liabrary HP3[001...001..].

But physically that labled cartridge is not available, but i have another cartridge with WU6973L3. How to configure this new cartridge for the old one instead of WU6969L3.

Moreover how to add cartridge list for media sets? i created a new media set, but i dont know to to add the cartridge media list for them.

guys im fighting with this issue more than two weeks. when i start its doesnt work all the job. By the grace of god, i made daily jobs working fine. As my understand the weekly job making problem due to unavailabilty of one cartridge or not enough the available space. i will explain clearly.

in the existing configuration, weekly media set lists are WU6961L3, WU6968L3, WU6969L3. Presently i have WU6961L3 AND WU6969L3 only. WU6968L3 is missing. Instead of that i have a new cartridge labled as WU6973L3. what i can do now?

Just put the tape into a slot, right-click and scan the slot.  The tape would be recognised.

You can leave all the tapes in the scratch media set.  After they are used, they would be automatically be moved to the media set targeted by the job.

Dear PKH, i just exchange the tapes from old slots and also inserted new tapes also. out of 8 now 2 only online. other 6 available automatically in scratch media set list. Now what i have to do?

Bathusha's picture

Dear CraigV, how to change overwrite/appendable settings of a tape?

CraigV's picture

Bathusha:

1. Just run a backup job. The scratch tapes will be used if needed & added to a media set.

2. To se the OPP/Append properties of a tape, it gets done on a media set. Go to the Media tab and set it there...

Thanks for CraigV and pkh, im almost in the stage to finish the issue. I have only one more doubt. I have 8 slots, also i put 8 tapes. But in the device pool list, i can able to see only 7. What to do to access the 8th one?

CraigV's picture

The 7th could be designated as a cleaning slot...check the autoloader's web front-end to verify this.
