This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have tape library with 20 LTO4.
I had to make backup to go back one month ( a mounth ago ).

I wanted to know what you think the best strategy ( incremental backup ).

I have two server ( server01 , server02 ):

Step 1 Create Mediaset:

Media sets Daily
Overwrite Protection Period: 1 week
Append Period: 12 hours

Media sets Weekly
Overwrite Protection Period: 5 weeks
Append Period: 12 hours

Step 2 Create Backup:

Job1 -> server01:

Name: server01 - Backup file

FULL - Weekly
Schedule: Every 1 Week on Friday at 23:00

Storage: All Tape Library
Media set: Media sets Weekly
When this job begins: Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media ...

INC - Daily
Schedule: Every 1 Day at 23:00

Storage: All Tape Library
Media set: Media sets Daily
When this job begins: Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media ...

same thing for the server02 but with different folders.

you think the configuration is correct? I can go back one month?
I can retrieve files older than a month?

thx.

You can restore 35 days ago data from your FULL backups.

But consider this situation: A file created on saturday and deleted before taking the next FULL backup i.e before friday. Is there any chance to get a restore request after 10 days for that file? If yes, you can't do it with the above requirement. I know this is very odd but met a customer recently with same kind of requirement.

If you have such a requirement then you have to keep incrementals also for a bit long, according to requirement. Otherwise it just looks fine.

Also consider increasing Append period (6 days) for daily backups. Otherwise daily one tape will be used for backups. If your incremental backups are less in size, then all the incrementals during a week can be fit into one tape.

As usual, thanks a lot.
I will keep in my mind what you said.

In reality I left another Job : vmware infrastructure.
The first two jobs are to save specific files on virtual server ( server01, server02 ) and the third jobs for saving entire virtual machine:

CASE STUDY 1 - Only full backup every week - go back one month:

job3 -> server(vcenter) -> VM: server01, server02 .....

Step1 Create Mediaset:

Media sets VM-Disaster recovery
Overwrite Protection Period: 4 weeks
Append Period: 24 hours

Job3 -> server03:

Name: server03 Disaster Recovery vmware

FULL - Weekly
Schedule: Every 1 Week on Saturday at 23:00

Storage: All Tape Library
Media set: Media sets VM-Disaster recovery
When this job begins: Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media ...

CASE STUDY 2 - go back one month with incremental

job3 -> server03 (esx) -> vm1,vm2, ....

Step1 Create Mediaset: <-- recreate media sets or use the existing one (Media sets Daily , Media sets Weekly ) ?

Job3 -> server03:

Name: server03 Disaster Recovery vmware

FULL - Weekly
Schedule: Every 1 Week on Saturday at 23:00

Storage: All Tape Library
Media set: Media sets VM-DR
When this job begins: Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media ...

INC - Daily
Schedule: Every 1 Day at 23:00

Storage: All Tape Library
Media set: Media sets Daily
When this job begins: Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media ...

is correct according to your experience ?
I can retrieve Virtual machine older than a month?
