  • 1.  Symantec Embedded Database - Stopped / Won't restart

    Posted Oct 04, 2011 11:58 AM

    Yesterday morning I tried to login to the Symantec Protection Center. I received a message about the database not being available and noticed that the service for the Symantec Embedded Database wasn't running. Starting it manually didn't work and I've been browsing the forum to find an answer, with no satisfying results.

    I will try to mention as much as I can of the events up until now.

    Considering a previous post by me (https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/endpoint-protection-sbs-120-memory-issues) I have been instructed to upgrade our SBE 12.0 to SBE 12.1. I planned to do this last Friday and at that moment looked for the necessary files. Apparently one has to upgrade the product first — generating a new license — before one can download the files. I did this and was able to download the files. However, considering other urgent matters, I wasn't able to perform the actual upgrade on Friday so it was postponed to the second half of this week.

    On Saturday morning a colleague of mine noticed that the Symantec Protection Center was still running. It seemed as if a time-out had occured whereby the logon screen had come on again. At the moment it appeared as if the server was 'halted' or extremely slow. Therefor he decided to 'exit' the Protection Center and restart the server. I can't find any messages about the Embedded Database not being started after the server restart. On Monday morning all the client-PC's still showed a Symantec Icon with a 'green light'. So everything 'appeared' to be allright.

    After reading some of the posts on this very issue we decied to restart the server once again during lunch. After this all the clients showed only a Symantec icon without the 'green light'.

    I have since tried some of the procedures that are around here on the forum;

    • renaming Sem5.log to Sem5.log.old and recreate it using Dbsrv9.exe -> failed
    • run DBvalidator.bat -> failed

    I want to upgrade the SBE 12.0  to SBE 12.1 but it is stated in the procedure for the upgrade to backup the database. But I need to get it up and running again before I can create a good backup.

    For your convenience I've already included some of the log files (the ones that are mentioned in several other posts).

    Help needed. Urgent!

    Kind regards

    Created a case with Symantec and they have been in contact with me.

    Apparently a missing ODBC connection for ASA 9 prevented the Protection Center from working (no connection to the database!).

    Thanks.
