  • 1.  Symantec Encryption Desktop unable to start disk encryption in HP Laptops

    Posted Feb 24, 2015 07:04 AM

    Hi,

We are using Symantec Encryption Desktop 10.3.2. We are having some newly purchased HP laptops (model -HP Probook 440G4 / 740 /660), and in those laptops after installing PGP we are unable to start Whole Disk Encryption.

    So far troubleshooting done from my end is as follows;

    1. From BIOS I enable Legecy Boot option.

    2. Upgrade Intel Raid Driver.

    3. Check disk partition, is shows as "Dynamic" not "GPT"

Please help I am unable to find any clue.

    Hi,

    1. What is the model of the HDD drive as well

    2. Can you make sure that all of your drives on this machine are fully up to date.

    3. Can you post commands:

    pgpwde.exe --enum

    pgpwde.exe --status

    pgpwde.exe --list-users

    4. Can you post partition structure from computer management or via diskpart command

    5. How the disk is visible on PGP as 'Unknown Bus' or 'Fixed Drive'

    6. Can you also try to run the pgpwde.exe command to encrypt the drive from the command line and send a feedback.

pgpwde.exe --encrypt --disk 0 --passphrase "xxxxx"

    HTH

You stated that the disk shows as "Dynamic", not "GPT".  Is this correct?  We do not support dynamic disks with Encryption Desktop.  You would need to convert the disk to a Basic disk.

There is an article on Sevenforums that shows how to convert the disk to Basic below.  The normal process calls for a full backup of data, as all data on the disk will be lost.  Sevenforums recommends using a partition tool to retain data.  As with any third-party tool, this is not officially endorsed supported by Symantec, and is to be used at your own risk.

Are the systems given a corporate image, or do you use the pre-loaded Windows?  HP Probooks ship with some features and software that can prevent our encryption products from working properly.

HP Client Security has encryption features and a BIOS password that both would interfere with SED.  You may need to disable or uninstall these to encrypt the drive.

Check to make sure the TPM module is enabled in BIOS. I had a similar issue before and enabling the module fixed me up.
