Symantec Endpoint 12.1 RU2 on Windows 8 - advice with error 1603

Created: 08 May 2013 | 14 comments

Dear Community

Just wanted to share something which I hope helps others.

I have today been trying to install SEP 12.1.2015.2015 (RU2) on a shiny new Lenovo Tablet 2 - running Windows 8 Professional 32bit.
I have been unable to install it - the installer would get as far as saying "0 seconds remaining" - then hang for a little while then disappear.

When checking the SEP_INST.log file in appdata\local\temp - it was reporting error 1603

The solution was to

1. Turn off Windows defender
2. Remove windows update: KB2781197 then reboot (reboot took about 10 mins while stuck on configuring windows updates screen)
3. once rebooted - confirm the patch is removed one last time
4. Install SEP12.1 RU2 again.

This now allowed me to install the SEP client.

Really hope this helps someone else, I wasted the entire day on this!

This is a known issue. Here is the Symantec KBA for it:

Symantec Endpoint Protection client fails to install to recently updated Windows 8 computers

Look at that!

But you see the problem is that i didnt know it would not install because of a recently installed Windows 8 update. This is a new device which had the patch installed already.  Therefore I was not in a position to be searching on "recently installed patch".  Also there is no mention of the actual error (1603) which you see in the SEP_INST.log file.    Therefore I hope that my article is useful to others in my position who did not have any direction in which to search - other than error 1603.

There used to be a KBA for known issues for 12.1 but it appears to have been replaced. If I can find a new one I will post it here.

You can work around this problem using one of the following:

  • Disable Windows Defender before installing the SEP client
  • Remove KB2781197 before installing the SEP client

Hope that helps!!

Hello,

This problem is fixed in the Latest version of Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1 Release Update 3 (12.1 RU3) which has been released on June 6 2013.

New fixes and features in Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.3

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH206828

After applying Microsoft update KB2781197 to a Windows 8 computer, the Symantec Endpoint Protection client installer fails

Fix ID: 3123310

Solution: For installations on Windows 8, removed the option to enable/disable Windows Defender after install, as this is no longer supported. Windows Security Center (WSC) will automatically disable Windows Defender when Symantec Endpoint Protection registers with WSC.
