symantec endpoint alternatives
Created: 11 Oct 2012 | 9 comments
Hi, I just wanted to find out if anyone out there left Symantec Endpoint for some alternative and came back? I have Symantec Endpoint 11 and have all kinds of problems coming up here and there for the past couple of years. I was thinking to try Endpoint 12 but I still see posts about all the problems people are having. I'm wondering if it might be time to move on and look for other alternatives out there. Anyone has suggestions? I manage about 100 clients and about a dozen servers.
How ironic the site is spitting an unexpected error, please try again later message.
Thanks!

If you share details about the kind of problems you were facing, we would suggest you some best practices that may help.
But believe me both SEP 11 and SEP 12.1 are great products and i have seen the working in big environmnet.
Yes you are right, there may be some challenges, but I don't think that should be a big problem.

Oh thanks, I never knew I could get so much help on here. Some of the more recent issues I can think of is....
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs"
Servers running out of disk space. I manually delete folders from this directory from time to time. I never really looked into a solution for this one. Is there a best practice for this?
Servers and clients lose connection with the Symantec server. Even after reboot the machines does not connect. I need to go into services and manually start "Symantec Management Client". Setting was set to automatic startup. After I start the service, then on the next restart it works fine.
I had a few instances when symantec endpoint protection manager console would take more than 15 minutes to open. It must have been doing something in the background? I think once, I seen a message somewhere that it was repairing the database and that one I had to leave alone overnight. This is on its own embedded database version.
Event Type: Error
This morning a user complains about her PC being very slow right after startup. This is another one that I never looked into yet. My coworker seen that a message was showing "file system auto-protect is malfunctioning" on the symantec splash screen. (image attached) He mentioned to me that after the error went away, then the PC started working as normal. This is on an older PC, I think 1.5 gig ram, P4 2.8mhz.
There are more but I cannot really think of it right now. Thanks for any suggestions!
The Disk space issue you are refering to , we sued to see in SEP Mr1 and MR2
I have not seem that issue any more in last 2-3 years,
Now as far has SEPM taking log time to open is concerned there are twaeks for that.
The Bottom line is , there are issue with SEP but all can be resolved :)

You are only partially correct. One of the ways to resolve the issues; is to, as the poster has asked, switch to a competing product.
There are numerous problems with SEP, and some of them come back in the next RU. Look at the number of posts for

Hello,
I agree with Prachand's Comment.
Configure the Disk space Management for Virus Def. To configure the disk space used for LiveUpdate downloads
In the console, click Admin.
Click Servers and select the site that you want to configure.
Under Tasks, click Edit Site Properties, and then click LiveUpdate.
Under Disk Space Management for Downloads, type the number of content downloads that you want to store.
If you want to reduce the amount of disk space used, uncheck the Store client packages unzipped to provide better network performance for upgrades option. Note: Disabling this option also disables the ability of Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager to construct deltas between content revisions and may adversely affect network performance for updates.
Click OK.
