  • 1.  SYMANTEC ENDPOINT PROTECTION 12.1 DISCONNECTS NETWORK

    Posted Jul 03, 2012 01:00 PM

Has anybody encountered issues with their network being randomly disconnected while SEP12.1 is installed.  I have read other forums where this issue occurred on older versions of SEP and only on certain network adapters.

We recently purchased a bunch of new computers.  All have integrated Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connectors.  Everything works fine until I install SEP12.1.  It will randomly disconnect the computer off the network.  Most notably, it will disconnect for sure if transferring large data files.  Even disabling anti-virus and network protection has no affect.  If I uninstall SEP12.1, I no longer have this issue so I know it is SEP related.

We use Windows 7 Pro (64Bit) in a networked environment with Server 2008 64bit.

I have downloaded the newest version of SEP12 and all available patches with no avail.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  Or am I going to have to wait several months before Symantec officially releases a patch for this.  I don't exactly want to wait that long without any protection.

Any info would be much appreciated!!!!

    Hello,

Is the Windows Firewall Enabled via GPO?

Make sure you have only 1 firewall running on the machines.

About Windows Firewall and Symantec Endpoint Protection's NTP

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH97986

It is best practice that only one software firewall should be run on a computer. Two firewalls that run on one computer at the same time can drain resources, and the firewalls might have rules that conflict with each other. Enabling more than one firewall program is likely to result in conflicts and poor performance.

    Hope that helps!!

    Hi Mithun,

Thanks for the reply. By default when SEP is installed, it disables the Windows firewall.  But I have also confirmed that and the only firewall active is SEP.

My issue is somewhat similar to the below post except that it's not on a Dell computer.

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/ideas/fix-network-threat-protection-causing-network-disconnects-dell-laptopsdesktops

Unfortunately there was no real confirmed solution to that post neither.  I have tried their recommended solution of disabling the NTP but that does not work.

    Hello,

Disabling the Firewall Policies from SEPM would not help, you would have to uninstall NTP and ADC features from the server and the client machine and restart the machines.

    Check if that helps!!

    Hi Mithun,

I created a new custom installation package without NTP. I can now transfer large files now without my network being disconnected.  I no longer get the random network disconnections neither.  It seems the NTP may be the culprit.  Is this going to be the official fix for this issue (by not installing NTP)?

Will Symantec release a patch for this.  Ideally one would want full protection (virus and network threats).

Thanks for you time and help.  Much appreciated!

    Hello,

I agree with you that you may require a NTP feature (Firewall) on all the machine.

Deciding which features to install on the client

In your case, I would suggest to Freshly Install the BETA version of SEP 12.1 RU2 on few of your TEST machines and check if the Issue is resolved.

NOTE: BETA RELEASE is for TESTING on TESTING ENVIRONMENT only.

If the issue is not getting resolved, create a Case with Symantec Technical Support.

    Hi Mithun,

Thanks for the link for the BETA release.  Unfortunately, SEP12.1 RU2  is not yet available for downloading (as mentioned in the download link).  It mentions that it won't be available until at least mid July, 2012.

I will keep an eye out for it though as I would like to see this particular issue resolved.

    Thanks for you help..
