    Hi,

I have a fresh install of OS X Mountain Lion, updated to 10.8.4.  Everything is updated.  I installed Java 7 update 25.  I then installed SEP 12.1.2015.2015.  Live Update will not run because it is looking for Java 6 from Apple, which is no longer available.  How do I make Live Update run?

    Thanks,

    Dwayne

Umm, yeah.  And as I said in my post I have Java 7 update 25 installed.  I read in another post on this forum that SEP 12.1.2 was supposed to support Java 7.  Why is it still looking for Java 6?

that if you install only Oracle Java JRE 7, it will not appear in this list. You must install the full JDK in order for JRE 7 to be listed.

New version of SEP is 12.1.3. Try with that version as well.

You need to read that again in full context:

The Applications -> Utilities -> Java Preferences application is part of Apple's implementation of Java. Once Apple no longer distributes Java as part of their release, the Java Preferences application is retired.

Under Apple's implementation of Java, it was possible to have multiple JREs installed, and the Java Preferences app was used to determine the first compatible version that would be used. The following instructions show how to change the default JRE.

    • Launch Java Preferences. The Java Preferences window contains a list of installed JREs. Java applications and command line tools use the listed order to determine the first compatible version to use.
The Vendor column indicates whether the Java release is supplied by Apple or Oracle. The Version column specifies the version of Java that is installed.
    • To make JRE 7 the default version of Java, re-order the list by dragging Java SE 7 to the top of the list.

Note that if you install only Oracle Java JRE 7, it will not appear in this list. You must install the full JDK in order for JRE 7 to be listed.

Java Preferences is now retired.  Apple no longer distributes Java as part of the release.

The steps you referred to were given ONLY to tell you how to make the Oracle Java 7 display in the Java Preferences window.

seems like it always calls java 6..Can you do the same?

The SEP installer is calling /usr/libexec/java_home, which is a symlink to an Apple Java proprietary binary.  Since all it does when invoked without arguments is return a value for $JAVA_HOME... I cheated and replaced it with a tiny script that just echoes out the literal string for the Java 7 Home directory.  Et voila, I no longer need the soon-to-be-out-of-date Apple Java 6 to install SEP!

Thanks Rafeeq!  I will give that a try.  That sounds like a great workaround.
