Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Service will not start

  • 1.  Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager Service will not start

    Posted Aug 05, 2009 09:57 AM
    Hi,
I've recently installed SEPM on the E:\ partition of one of my servers (2003 Std), however I am unable to log into SEPM as I cannot start the SEPM service. I get the message below
"The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do."

I also get the following error in the Event Viewer:
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: semsrv
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 4096
    Date: 05/08/2009
    Time: 14:49:53
    User: N/A
    Computer: ADMIN1
    Description:
The Java Virtual Machine has exited with a code of -1, the service is being stopped.

I've looked at the known issues on the below document and everything appears to be in order. I cannot see any problems with IIS.

Is this SQL or embedded database?

It says Can't read local setting from database! in the log
Have you tried running the management server configuration wizard
    is the odbc connection successful?

do u see 5 symantec virutal directories in IIS?

Hi Check if the following steps could help

    Reisntall SEP Manager
Restore the communication with new database with the old domain id.

Run Reconfigure Management Server Wizard from Start -- Programs -- Symantec Endpoint Protection Managed

Enter all the required information that is asked during the Wizard

This should take care of the issue.

    Hi Rafeeq,
    it's the embedded database.
Yes I ran the management server config wizard after the install and successfully configured the database.
I'm guessing it's a problem with odbc myself, I am unable to connect see below for error.

Yes I see the 5 virtual directories in IIS (see below)

    Hi,
I did this after the installation and successfully created the embedded DB but I still cannot log in nor start the service.

    Hi Prachand,
I've been to both these links already and all appeared to be fine. I believe there is some problem with the ODBC connector.

Are you able to start embedded database service ?
If yes then run the dbvalidator to check if DB is still working :\program files\Symantec\Symantec endpoint protection manager\tools

If still its not working then ..check if you have another application that uses Sybase ( adaptive server anywhere ) database ..check in event viewer if you see any process for dbsrv..

    Hi Vikram,
Yes the embedded database service is running without any problems. I also ran the dbvalidator and got the message the database is valid.
In event viewer I saw no entries for dbsrv, however I do believe I'm running another Sybase Database - it is an IGel embedded Database for Thin Client management. And you were right it was causing a conflict of some sort. I stopped this database and associated services and was able to start SEPM manager service and log in to SEPM so thank you for putting me on the right track.

Interestingly once I got Symantec up and running I was able to bring back the Igel database online without any difficulties
