Enable sylink logging on the client to check the communication between server/client. Let it run thru a few heartbeats to collect the necessary info. post the log here if you need assistance

is your SEPM updated?

how does the client gets the update? is it from SEPM or LUA or Symantec LU?

as Brian suggested enable sylink if it is supposed to get the updates from SEPM considering SEPM is updated.

How many client have the issue?

Clietns are communicated with SEP Manager?

Is the SEP client communicating to the SEPM server?

Is the SEPM updated with the definitions?

Is this happening only on 1 of your client machine or there are a number of client machines which are not updating?

In case the SEPM is not updated, try to update the SEPM 12.0 by following the article below:

First check that whether your site SEPM server is updating or not? you have configured SEPM to receive update from Symantec upate direct or throughy LUA? cross check the first SEPM update status, If SEPM is updating cross check the Clietn update setting on SEPM console, where its configured to received update through SEPM or Live update? to check go to SEPM console---Policies----Live Update-----Server Setting---here pls select (Use the default management server) if you dont have any remote client. uncheck the option of (Use a Live update server)

To check SEPM update status go to home-- check at bottom what satatus shows, here two option , one is latest on  SEPM  status other is Latest From Symantec , you SEPM virus definiion status should be up to date, then your client would be update accrodingly,

Hope your issue would be solve soon to cross check all.

May be the defintion which avaiable on Server is corrupted, try to clean and check.
