  • 1.  Symantec Install Package :Offline Install Error

    Posted Dec 03, 2013 03:08 PM

I was trying to create an offline package for SMP CMS 7.1 SP2 and I was able to create the package using the Symantect Installation Manager 7.5. When I click the exe file after the package is created, I am getting the following error: "Symantec_Install_Package_XXXXXXX is not a valid Win 32 application."

I didnot get any errors while the package was created. I see the file on my desktop with a size of 6.28 GB.

I am using  Win 7 64 bit machine for this whole process. Is that the issue?

I suspect the issue is that you are running it on a 32 bit machine, CMS 7.1 has to be installed on R2 of Windows Server 2008, which is only 64 bit.

I am not running this on a 32 bit machine. I am creating the package on a Win 7 64 bit machine and my 2008 R2 Server is 64 bit as well.

    Hi KESH MAN,

⇒ Did you try to run as "Administrator" Symantec_Install_Package.exe ? (If UAC is enabled)

⇒ Did you try to re-create same CMS 7.1 on Win7 x64 and install it again on Win2008 R2 x64?

⇒ Also this issue can be caused by these possibilities:

File is corrupt, bad, or missing.
If the file or program you're attempting to run is corrupt or missing,
Windows will be unable to execute the file properly and sometimes generate this error message.

    File system corrupt
To check the integrity of protected system files, run the following command:

    sfc/scannow

    File unregistered
If the error occurs at the opening of files, click Start / Run, then enter and confirm the following command:

    regsvr32 / i SHELL32.DLL

    Problem with browser configuration
Disconnect from IE (Internet Explorer) or Firefox
Double click on IE (even if you only use Firefox)
    Tools> Internet Options> Security Tab
Verify that the security level for this zone is medium-high and high NO.
    Validate OK
    Disconnect
    Reconnect

    Thanks,

    IP.

    Hi Igor,

Thanks for your response. Here are my answers for your questions:

⇒ Did you try to run as "Administrator" Symantec_Install_Package.exe ? (If UAC is enabled)

Yes. UAC is disabled before running this.

⇒ Did you try to re-create same CMS 7.1 on Win7 x64 and install it again on Win2008 R2 x64?

I created the package on noth Win 7 X64 and x86 machines, got the same error on both.

    Result for sfc/scannow:

    C:\Users\Administrator>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I don't know why a browser should come into play here since I am creating a package using the SIM and trying to install it on a server.

Try opening/viewing the package with 7-zip, that should tell you if it's the creation or extraction of the package that's the problem.

I've verified it using CMS 7.1 SP2 and unable to reproduce such problem:

    • - I've created package via SIM 7.1.206 on Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise x64
    • - Downloaded this Installation package on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 x64

Installation package successfully extracts zipped packages.

Seems like you have specific case when this problem occurs.

Did you try to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"?

Sorry folks, couldn't catch up with this for the last couple of days!

@Andy : Thank you Andy! That was a life saver. I downloaded 7zip and opened with that and that took care of the file. I am half way through, still struggling to  start the installation. As I start the SIM on the stand alone 2008 R2 server, it doesn't seem to recognise that I am running of a 7.34 GB installation package folder :-( . It prompts me to connect the internet for installing the package.

@Igor: I feel like I am missing something here. I did change the product listing path to point to the local extracted folder, that didn't help either. Would you mind passing on the installation steps that you have taken once the package is copied over to the offline server.

Thank you guys for your valuable time, I don't know how many times I have created the packages so far, it's just annoying!

    @KESH MAN,

    1. Seems like SIM uses pl from http://www.solutionsam.com/solutions/pl/*

You can check it in registry

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\AIM\Configuration\ProductListings]

    2. If you've extracted offline package -> installed SIM, then you can:

    • Manually copy all extracted files from offline package to SIM location

    --> C:\Program Files\Altiris\Symantec Installation Manager\Installs\Altiris\

    3. Open SIM --> choose your .pl from C:\Program Files\Altiris\Symantec Installation Manager\Installs\Altiris\ where you've manually copied all data

    Hope it will helps

    Thanks,

    IP.
