    Posted Mar 15, 2016 05:49 PM

    hi,

symantec management agent wasnt running on a pc win 7 anymore, and thus uninstalled it.  Now trying to reinstall it, and keep getting a message of >>  Install Failed. Error message: Failed to run action: SetPermissions        i have tried everything on the internet to resolve.  such as

AeXAgentUtil.exe /DeleteDevices - Deletes known Altiris legacy device drivers.
    AeXAgentUtil.exe /UninstallAgents - Deletes all registered agents.
AeXAgentUtil.exe /Clean - Attempts to completely remove the Agent. It will attempt to detect the relevant version and remove all files and registry entries.

deleted Altiris registry entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Altiris

however, when i try to delete the Altiris registry keys, i get a error message also.  Have searched for all the ways to remove the key, such as setting permissions on the keys.  taking ownership of the keys,  running windows in safe mode,  using programs to simulate  the  "system account"  while running regedit.  but just cannot delete the keys.  error message  >>    cannot delete Altiris:  Error while deleting key "

these keys are probably what is causing the issue, ,  anyone had the same issue,  please reply.  hate to half to reimage

    1. How you've tried to install Agent on this PC: Manually from "AeXNSC.exe" package or by push from SMP Console?

    2. You've said that tried anything possible like set permissions for these reg keys, etc and all these things were done under administrative account on this client PC without success...

    • C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\ location is empty on client PC and there is no "Symantec Management Agent" service available as well and you've opened cmd or regedit "Run as Administrator"?

Wonder is there any "Group Policy" assigned on this PC, which restricts such actions, etc even under administrative local account?

    Hi thanks for the reply,

But yes, i ran command line, as elevated administrator.  Also,  Yes i tried to install manually using AeXNSC.exe

I dont know if there is a group policy blocking this removal or not.   i will try and find out.   thank you

Check there are no Symantec or Altiris services running. If there are any entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Altiris try deleting them individually, one may be corrupt. Try deleting the key using reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris /f

    thanks for suggestions,

i tried that and it said  Error:  partially deleted key

then i restarted and ran the " reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris /f "  command again, and it said that it could not find the key.

Thus i thought was deleted., but when u go into regedit,  the key remains,  and still unable to manually delete it.

So , i broke down, and did a system restore.  The system restore came back with the message that it didnt complete the restore, and the message was that  "  unable to restore the file  C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents   Agent to its previous files "

so i will probably just reimage it.      OH, i also took it off the domain to see if that would allow deletion but it didnt,  then changed the name of the pc when adding back to domain,  but still no go.

will mess some more today. then reimage if no more suggestions today.  thank everyone

I have seen this kind of problems when there is a problem with the harddisk. Maybe you want to check if the harddisk is ok.
