Symantec Management Console......on Ubuntu/Linux

So, I can't imagine i'm the only one out here who has tried this...but perhaps I am.

I know that technically the only supported browser is IE, but Firefox does work fine for most of the console.  Actually, In Ubuntu/Linux, you can actually use a plugin called 'Moonlight' that emulates Silverlight to get that functioning as well.  The problem i'm running into though is actually with Java.  No matter which flavor I try, 1.6, 1.7, IcedTea, Openjre...they all give me the same error message when trying to open up Managing Software or Computers:

    No Suitable Plugins Were Found
    Unknown Plugin (application/x-java-applet;jpi-version=1.6)

I know this isn't a supported setup, but if anyone has any insight it would be great to get this to work...

    Thanks!

Rich, a few of us have used Firefox to get by on certain things, and a few have even used Safari, but none of us have had functionality in the Java-based software components, such as importing a new software resource and adding the package files.

Why not try WINE, if you *REALLY* need to use linux...

...but the Silverlight plugin doesn't function in WINE.  Also tried PlayOnLinux which is a front-end for Wine.  I was able to successfully install Silverlight into the IE session, but anytime a silverlight component tries to load it crashes (not just the SMC page either).

You also installed Java in there right?

in Wine? or in Ubuntu natively?

in ubuntu natively - yes, but I can only get it to recognize version 1.7...and I still get the error in the original post about 1.6.  I feel like if I could find a version of 1.6 and install it and get Firefox to recognize it and let me use it it might work, but Firefox won't load the plugin because it's an older version and i'm not sure how to override that.

in wine - no.  I could, but it wouldn't matter because anything that uses the Silverlight plugin crashes.  i've researched it a bit and it's a known bug that will likely never be fixed because no one uses Silverlight.  even MS is dropping their support level down for it in the coming years.

Are you installing at least Java 1.6 U10?

I've been trying 1.7.0_04 and trying to find a version of 1.6 as well (anything 1.6.0_20 or newer).  The plugin shows in Firefox when installing 1.7, but I think that's too new as I still get the same error in the initial post about 1.6.  I can't get Firefox in Linux to recognize anything with 1.6 as it says the plugin is disabled because it is an older version.  If you've used Ubuntu, etc you know that they like to have everything updated to the latest and greatest....sometimes to this sort of disadvantage.  ;-)
