Symantec Management Server Error after upgrading from 7.1 to 7.5

  • 1.  Symantec Management Server Error after upgrading from 7.1 to 7.5

    Hi,

    I have a problem since upgrading from 7.1 to 7.5. Every item I right click and want to open the properties of the item I receive the "Symantec Management Server Error" page.

    The problem is only on the parent NS (having hierarchy with 1 Parent and 1 Child) and if I disable the "Replication" it works fine.

    Here some error messages which I see in the logs when right klicking on properties.

    Failed to build the tree with the root node....

    I see the same log entries if I run a full / delta replication additionally to the error which states:

    Unable to resolve the specified rule against the specified node(Rule:Core Hierarchy Item Replication, Node:...)

    It seems like I do not get anywhere with my case with support which I have opened about 3 weeks ago... So I hope anyone out there can help out.

    Hi Stefan,

    could you please provide additional information for these questions:

    1. Do you use only SMP 7.1 or suite CMS 7.1 or ITMS 7.1?

    2. What exact version of SMP 7.1.xxxx you're used before upgrade to 7.5?

    3. Did you perform any stand-alone replications before upgrade to 7.5?

    4. Were there any custom items/nodes created before ugrade to 7.5?

    5. What is Item name which properties you're trying to see atfer upgrade to 7.5 and receiving this error in log?

    1. CMS 7.1 SP2 MP1 Rollup v6

    2. 7.1.8400

    3. Yes. Some standalone replication were in use but turned off during upgrade. Replication of computers up from child to parent.

    4. No. The setup was like that since at least 7.1 SP2

    5. It does not matter which Item i choose in the console. I can click on a report / filter /policy and receive the same error. I can also just try to see the properties from a folder and receive the error. Also the guids of the itmes seems to be items which were deleted long time ago.

    I've tried similar scenario using CMS 7.1 SP2 MP1 (without rolloup v6) upgraded to 7.5 release and see that I don't receive such problem with opening properties of any item like filter, report, etc., therefore it seems like problem has occured after rolloup v6 install and further upgrade performing to 7.5 release.

    I am almost certain that this is because of trash in the database from privious ugprades. I remember we had similar problems when upgrading to SP2 MP1.

    Support suggested in the meantime to run a repair on the database which fix this issue but now I have another issue instead. Which seems worse. Since the repair I cannot modify my user defined asset items. Will see if we can fix this.

    It seems the "new" problem I have is with the report "All Resources Picker Report". I cannot right click any item in that report. Something similar which is described in http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH205844 I also wonder if has something to do with the fact that we had rollup v3 installed earlier that seemed to have some fix for the same report.

    Somehow in the viewing control "ShowContextMenuLink" and "ShowEditPageLink" had disappeared. I think it happened during the repair but maybe it happened during the upgrade. This includes some link to Asset Management:

    /Altiris/AssetContractCommon/Manager/EditCreateResource.aspx?itemguid={_ItemGuid}
      ]]>

    Wonder if anyone else have the same problem. I managed to export the same report from a fresh NS 7.5 and imported it to my system and this did the trick.

    @Igor: Do you have Asset Management installed and have this viewing controls in the report?

    I'll take a look when server will be available and let you know.

    Question about your SMP 7.1 SP2 rollup v6 installed before upgrade to 7.5 release:

    • You've installed "Asset", "DS", "Inventory", "Patch", "SMP" and "ULM" rollup v6 fixes? Or only some separate fixes for separate product from rolloup v6?

    We had the rollup installed for all applicable products.

    And you had Asset SP2 MP1 installed separately before upgrade or you've installed it after upgrade to 7.5 version? Because by default Asset isn't included in CMS 7.1 SP2 MP1.

    The Asset Management was installed I think since SP1 for certain since SP2. So it was already installed before upgrading. And I know it was working as this is the part which we use for Software Delivery. And that is why it is important that it works otherwise we cannot install any applications.

    However, as I said I have fixed it in my environment and just wondered if it is a "general" problem and maybe others would be affected.

    Summary:

    1. Checked after upgrade from CMS 7.1 SP2 MP1 with rollup v6 to CMS 7.5 release

    •  I was able to successfully open properties for filter, report, etc while Hierarchy node is added or removed between 1 Parent and 1 Child CMS servers  - Problem isn't reproducible.

    2. Checked after upgrade from CMS 7.1 SP2 MP1 with rollup v6 to CMS 7.5 release (without Asset)

    • I was able to mouse right click resources for example in Notification Server - "Agent Version" report or in "All resources" Org view or in "All Computers" filter - Problem isn't reproducible.

    3. Checked after clean install of Asset Management 7.5 on already upgraded CMS from 7.1 SP2 MP1 with rollup v6 to CMS 7.5 release

    • I was able to mouse right click menu open to any resource in "All Resorces Picker Report" - Problem isn't reproducible.

     

    Don't have time to verify scenario when Asset was installed on CMS 7.1 SP2 before upgrade to CMS 7.5.

     

    Stefan, seems like these problems aren't always reproducible in case of such scenarios usage described above. Sounds good that you've fixed them :)
