Symantec Protection for Sharepoint Servers question - licensing

  • 1.  Symantec Protection for Sharepoint Servers question - licensing

    Posted May 06, 2009 04:17 PM

Sorry - I've asked the software vendor (I won't name names yet, but they aren't the sharpest tool as far as selling Symantec stuff - very UNknowledgable) and our rep didn't seem to be able to get us a good answer either, although he was able to get us by for a year while I attempt to find a better answer.
    The year is almost up!
MAYBE there's someone here who knows now. Hope so.
Anyway, The protection for Sharepoint requires a license key for the PRODUCT, which is a lifetime thing, doesn't expire, AND a license for the scanning definitions updates, and that DOES expire every 12 months.
We can get the product, that was no big deal, got the product, installed, downloaded the license file, applied it, great.
But no one told us we needed a license for definitions, so the product never updated! I finally got someone to admit "oh, you need another license key file" for that.
Ah, but the $64,000 question - HOW do you get that? Well no one knows! The vendor has no clue! They find nothing listed.
Support said "you need a license" but when I asked - ok, where, they said "your vendor will know".
    LOL - talk about circles.
So here's the deal - we know we need to renew the annual support - which entitles us for product updates, etc. but HOW do we tell the vendor what to sell us? They need some sort of a SKU or some stock number and they couldn't find it.
    Neither could I.
Here's what we have, and what we need:
We need the license for the updates - see, it expires.
Our vendor is lost and in fact, I don't fully trust that they are looking for our best interests.
NOW before ya all jump and say "then find a new vendor" we are REQUIRED by iowa law to use an approved vendor which DAS has already made contract with for state purchases - our hands our tied, thanks to politics. We need a "content" license and no one knows what that is.  In fact, it's SO bad you don't even LIST it in the product for Connect here - I can't choose to place it under the Protection for Sharepoint product category as there is none.

Try this link: http://www.symantec.com/business/protection-for-sharepoint-servers   Click on Buy / Purchasing Options and call their sales advisor.  I'm sure they can get you a part number for your reseller.
