Symantec scan engine 5.2.xxx need manual uninstall process
Was running Symantec's protection for sharepoint services - a couple of version back, actually, so it's an older version.
Decided it was past time to upgrade to the latest and greatest, which does indeed work and act and look very nice.
Because the old version INSISTED that although we had one SPS server and one SQL server, it called it a FARM and insisted that it be installed on both the SPS and SQL servers. (we actually have 2 SPS and 2SQL servers, but it's a one-on-one relationship where SPS1 works with SQL1 and DEVSPS works with DEVSQL, still not a FARM)
Apparently the new version, according to a Symantec employee, doesn't require the engine to be installed on the SQL server - unless we WANTED to.
So, to start fresh and get the latest installed with no bad stuff carried forward from old installs, I went about the tasks of fully uninstalling all Protection for SharePoint Services from the SQL and SPS servers.
That went ok until I tried to uninstall from the production SQL server............ the protection for sharepoint services part uninstalled great, but the scan engine (rev 5.2 I believe it is) will not uninstall. It's complaining that it needs some file to be able to uninstall, however, that file doesn't exist because the install files were put on the SQL server in a TEMP folder, the install run, and the SQL server ran out of space so all files not necessary for operatrions were removed to free up drive space.
I find it odd that a product needs a file to UNINSTALL, since all that should be required is the original GUID or software key or identifier, and the MSIEXEC.EXE file.
Should the scan engine not uninstall simply by running MSIEXEC.EXE along with the uninstall command and the GUID for the scan engine?
Since it won't - how can I manually remove this product but leave SEP fully intact on the same server?
Two Symantec products exist on the servers when all is good - SEP and the protection for sharepoint which includes the "scan engine" part.
I need a way to remove the SCAN ENGINE and leave the SEP product alone if that's possible It should be since they are distinct products, especailly with SEP 12.xxx these days.
Any way to manually remove the scan engine - completely - so I can install the very latest version I just downloaded?
PS - heads up again - you still don't even LIST this product, there's no forum place for these questions, and when I "select one product (required)" - ha, it's not even in the list, so I had to just grab a product so I could post. I chose antivirus as that most closely matches this product goals - protect sharepoint files and services from "viruses".
I've asked before, and I see several others have - can we please have a place in Connect for Protection for SharePoint?
