Symantec Upgrade from 11.0.7 to 12

    Hi,

Were upgrading out Symantec server to the newer 12 version but for the upgrade process, and if I am wrong on this please advise, the server would be upgraded first and then the clients correct? But with that, can the 12 server version still manage the 11 version clients? And can I hold off for some time before I create the new 12 packages for the clients?

    Thanks.

Yes, you would upgrade the SEPM, then the client.

Yes, the 12.1 SEPM can manage 11.x clients.

If you're going from 11.x (which is Enterprise only) to 12.1 Enterprise, your clients won't update automatically. If you have 12.1 Small Business edition, I don't believe you can it migrate the SEPM from an Enterprise Edition to a Small Business Edition. SEPM 12.1 Small business will (as I understand it) auto-update the client software the first time it checks in to the new SEPM.

Be aware that from version 11.0.7xxx you can upgrade only to 12.1.1000.157 (RU1). Upgrade to 12.1.671.4971 is not supported.

Yea the version we have is 12.1.1000.157 RU1. I've been testing it a little bit on machines before upgrading the SEPM. Going by the documentation I have for it, it looks like I'll have to change the packages in order for the clients to update.

So I've been tasked with upgrading our endpoint to 12.1. Our current version of endpoint is 11.0.6300.803. I do not see a distinction in our contract that says small business or enterprise, etc.

Looks like someone has already downloaded a package for 12.1 version 12.1.671.4971

Is this going to work or is this the incorrect install? Also will clients auto-update or will this need to be done manually?

    Thanks in Advance!

You have the first release of 12.1--I would recommend downloading RU1 (12.1.1000). The easiest way to tell whether you have Small Business or Enterprise might be the number of seats you're licensed for--or what your license paperwork says.

This might seem like a stupid question, but when you upgrade from 11.x to 12.x is SEP 12 a new program or can you obtain an update package?

If you mean can SEP 12.1 be installed over 11, yes it can.

If by 'update package' you mean a patch, I don't see such a thing is available, nor would it be possible because it is a major migration up. You would need to get the installaiton (DVD-sized) from Fileconnect with your serial number.

Also I seem to have misplaced my symantec serial number is there a way I can find it on my machine or will have to contact customer support?

The serial won't appear within the SEP interface. It will appear within the 12.1 SEPM after you've applied your licence info. If you got an email from us after your purchase the serial should be there in the attached PDF. It should start with an M, followed with 10 numbers.
