symcscan[10661]: segfault when starting ScanEngine

Created: 20 Jun 2012 | 2 comments

We've just installed ScanEngine 5.2.13 on our Linux SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1  (x86_64) server. The installation appeared to complete ok - according to the log. However after installation the processes were not running and we cannot start them. We use:

/etc/init.d/symcscan start

and it echo's

Starting Symantec Scan Engine, please wait...

with a return code of 0

No 'sym' processes are running and there are errors such as this in the /var/log/messages file:

Jun 19 16:15:43 utverpa1 kernel: [ 7205.816581] symcscan[10659]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp 00000000571c

We installed the 32-bit Java that ships as part of the distribution. Java details (java -version):

java version "1.6.0_25"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_25-b06)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 20.0-b11, mixed mode, sharing)

Any assistance in resolving this issue would be gladly received. Many thanks. Guy

This issue was resolved by searching for other versions of Java (versions not shipped as part of ScanEngine)on the server. We found another one (it was not in $PATH) and removed it. ScanEngine is now operational

One reason I like SuSe is becuase it doesn't have any really old crappy JREs preinstalled. I am surprised that you had this issue on SuSe. I would expect something like this on RHEL or CentOS.
