    Hello

We using patch management solution 7.1

We deploying patch on client system using as soon as setting and we uncheck restart required option in policy but still machines gets restarted in specific sites forcefully.

Can anyone having option to restrict reboot after 48 hrs like after applying patch if system need compulsory reboot then it will give a pop up for 48 hours and client will choose whether he wants to reboot immediately or restart after 48 hours.

    Hello,

Please check Settings>Agents>Plug-ins>Software>Patch Management>Windows>Default Software Update Plug-in Policy in Management Console:

     - Installation Schedules tab - Allow restart after installation

     - Notification tab

    Would you mind providing

    - NS_NAME.xml from one of the clients (located in Program Files/Altiris/Altiris Agent/Client Policies folder)?

    - AeXSWDPolicy.xml from the same client (located in Program Files/Altiris/Altiris Agent/Agents/SoftwareManagement/Software Delivery folder)?

Also, do these clients reboot forcefully after each update cycle or can you name a particular update that caused clients to reboot?

    Thank you

That is possible and is what we do when we install patches to workstations. We give the user the option to delay reboot for patching for up to 7 days. The pop-up and delay will only be available if the user is logged on when the patches are installed. If no one is logged on the computer will reboot immediately after installing patches if a reboot is needed.

In your software update plug-in policy you will need to do the following.
    1. In the section "Restart Defaults" pick "At the end of software upgrade cycle".
    2. Under the Notification tab pick the option "Allow user to defer", set it to how long you allow them to defer reboots, and type in the message you'd like to see.

Would you mind providing following files from one of your problematic clients:

    - NS_NAME.xml from %ProgramFiles%\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Client Policies

    - AeXSWDPolicy.xml from %ProgramFiles%Altiris\Altiris Agent\Agents\SoftwareManagement\Software Delivery

Also, is there a specific update that caused clients to reboot or that happens after aeach patch cycle?

    Thanks.

    HI DerikDavis

Its a very nice that what you saying but winodws also give a pop up for the same. If we set system restart of 48 hours later but by default windows pop restart the system maximum after 4 hours.

How we can remove that windows 4 hours pop up or restrict winodows up to restart

So based on your statement it sounds like you have both Windows updates and Altiris applying patches.

    Is that correct?

If so that could explain why your systems are rebooting even though you have specified in Altiris not to reboot when installing patches. If the patches are installed by Windows updates rebooting will be governed by how Windows update is configured. To control Windows updates you'll need to look into setting up group policies in AD. Or decide to disable Windows updates and rely on Altiris for patching. Having two systems for patching your computers is always problematic especially if one is not managed or controlled.

    Hi Derik

We dont have Windows updates. Patches are not installing by Windows updates. We only deploying patches through Altiris Patch Management.

Your sound is good that we need to check windows update is turn on or off. but are you sure that if windows update is turn off then it will give the pop up for restart???

Yes if you configure the software update policy as I described and Windows updates is turned off Altiris will pop up a message after it installs patches that need to reboot. Please make sure that you do not disable the Windows update service (which is needed by Altiris to patch). Set Windows updates to never check for updates. The only time I have seen Windows pop-up and restart a computer is when Windows updates installs the patch.
