  • 1.  System Freeze during Scan?

    Posted May 16, 2010 09:23 PM

My weekly scan (windows vista) freezes my computer when it hits one particular file (WmiPrvSD.dll) about an hour into the scan.  Symantec keeps going, but the rest of the computer is inaccessible.  Malwarebytes and Windows Defender still scan fine with no problems found.

Is this a computer problem or a Symantec problem?

    Thanks in advance!

Manually scan the file and see what is the result.
move that file to some other pc and try to scan there..

What version of SEP 11 are you running? Are there any errors in the Windows Event viewer? Is the file local or on a network drive?

    The version is 11.0.4000.2295.
It hasn't ever said anything about errors, just sticks on the one particular file (though it keeps counting the time that has elapsed), i hear a clicking sound in the computer, and the rest of the programs on the computer are completely inaccessable.  I'm also not sure what the Windows Event Viewer is, but I've never seen anything about an error with this problem.  Everything just slowly freezes.
The file is on my hard drive, but it seems I can't find it in the program search function.
    Thanks for any help!

Try booting to Safe-mode and running the scan.

Windows Event viewer in Vista - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Open-Event-Viewer

Safe Mode in Vista -  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Advanced-startup-options-including-safe-mode
