System state re-direct restore

How to re-direct restore a system state using Backup exec 2012? It asks me to choose a drive to restore? How is that going to work?

Hi,

Go to the Backup Exec icon > Installation and licensing >Live Update and check to see if any updates are available. Install any (make sure to push out the agent to remote servers if any are installed).

Run a catalog on your device and then attempt the restore.

You can't redirect a system state as a system state it has to go back to a server of the same name.

Yes the option to redirect to a drive or even a folder on a drive is there and that will restore the files that make up the system state - as files. This can be useful to verify what is in a System State or to recover one specific file but would be difficult to make use of in terms of resurrecting a server.

The usual reasons for restoring a System State are

a) to get back to some form of last known good position on your current live server (no need for redirect)

b) as part of a manual DR process where you have lost the origonal server and have had to inistall the Operating System from the original install media as a workgroup member but with the same server name and IP address and then restore the System State over the top of this along with the file system backups to get back the original server. (again no need for redirect)
