  • 1.  Systems not showing up in the Machine Groups

Our PC that we were running GSS died so we reinstalled GSS on a new system and reregistered. Now after the "Remote Client Install" completes, nothing appear in the Machine Groups. The client installs without any problems but since nothing appears in the machine group we can't create any tasks.

Is there any way to make the PC's that have the Remote Client installed show up in the Machine Groups?

    Some additional information:
This was working fine before on our old PC.
I have our domain added to the supported domains and I have created a Console Service Account.
The Service Account I had to create manually since GSS did not add one to our domain during install.

When you do <help><about> in the console does it show any of your client licenses as being used?

As a test I think it would be worth visiting one client and rebooting (if you haven't already). If this does not cause it to show up in the console I would try a manual uninstall and re-install of the client on one of the machines.

Machines not showing up is rather common for this product. Out of 10 machines on my network 2 were problematic. My best advice is have the user close out all open programs such as VPN clients, and other software running in the task tray. Manually uninstalling and reinstalling seems to help too. Mcafee antivirus with firewall prevents proper installation too.

We figured our what our problem was. It turned out to be a network configuration problem where if the Ghost client is not able to contact the Ghost Console then it tries using NetBIOS over TCP/IP. But if there is no WINS server specified on the Ghost Console server then Ghost cant respond to the client even though the clients are talking to the console. You would think that Ghost would let you know this if it could not communicate back to the clients.

Okay, now I'm having this problem. It was working for awhile and now anytime I install a client it does not show up in the console. I have a WINS server configured and all that.

Have there been any updates or findings regarding this issue? We've rolled this solution (in conjunction with a front-end to automate many of the manual steps) out to more than forty-five sites and are seeing this issue just about everywhere! It's becoming a real pain.

    Solution please!

If you've got a network with multicast configured (i.e., enabled in your switch and if it is a Layer3 switch, supported by an IGMP querier) or a WINS server and it's still not working, then by all means send me packet traces taken at the client and server and I'll see what I can figure out.

We have Layer3 switches at only a few sites that are supported by an IGMP querier but we do have WINS servers configured and available to all desktops. If you think sniffs from both ends would be helpful I can get that for you.

They would be most helpful; nigel dot bree at gmail dot com is the way to get in touch with me, and if you need it I can arrange a secure upload facility.
