Tape access really slow after upgrading to Backup Exec 2010
Created: 29 Mar 2010 | 6 comments
Hello,
I recently upgraded our Backup Exec server to 2010. The upgrade went well, no errors or anything, but since then all our backup jobs to tape go incredibly slow. they used to run about 500 Mb/Min and now they start around that but after a few minutes get down to 8 Mb/Min or so. The backups to disk work fine.
Any one run into this issue before?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hope this piece of Information Helps you... and if it does then mark this response as Solution....!!!
The driver the tape is using is from Symantec, date: 1/23/2008 , version 5.1.34.0 I'm not sure where to find a newer one.
RSM = Removeable Storage service right? I disabled that.
I am using an HP StorageWorks 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloader with a Ultium 920 Tape drive over a SCSI connection.
from the devices tab, right click the drive \ properties
make sure that both "si ngle block" options are DIS abled
have you tried the mfg drivers?
If this response answers your concern, please mark it as a "solution"
What does the "Single Block" option do to the back jobs?
Single Block Write by-passes all buffering, writes single blocks to the Tape
This most usually results in extremely slow backups and "shoe-shining" of the drive, which can wear the drive mechanism out rather rapidly
If this response answers your concern, please mark it as a "solution"
Thanks for the info Ken. Time to make some changes I think.
