Tape Drive going offline

Created: 06 Jan 2014 | 6 comments

Hi Guys,

I could use some help here with backing up to tape. Details as follows;

Tape library: Quantum scalar i40

Tape drive: ultrium LTO 5, FC (But somehow the BE 2012 is considering it as SAS)

Partitioned the slots as one slot per partition.

Now when I try to backup a folder it says the tape drive is offline.

Now I did check for logs on the Tape library, can't find any. Tape drive is showing online on the Quantum.

Am I missing something big here? Guys, need help..

Note: this is our first installation.

Thanks in advance.

Do you see the Tape Drive in the Windows Device Manager?

Have you installed Microsoft Drivers for the medium changer and Symantec drivers for the Tape Drive?

Do you see any hardware related errors in the Windows Event Viewer?

...I would assume that with BE seeing the library initially, that Windows sees it. The fact that BE sees the library as a SAS unit instead of being an FC unit could be the issue...

Thanks!

Hi.

Run tapeinst.exe to install the Symantec drivers. This should sort out the issue with BE seeing it as a SAS unit instead of an FC unit.

If this is still the case, make sure your library is on the BE 2012 HCL and listed as supported.

Thanks!

Make sure there isnt anything stuck in the library.

Do a complete power cycle of your tape drive:

1. Power Off the Server
2. Power off the Tape Drive
3. Power on the Tape Drive to a 'Ready' State
4. Power on the Server

How are you observing that BE is considering it a SAS tape drive?

Now when I try to backup a folder it says the tape drive is offline.

Is the tape drive offline in the BE GUI?  Are there any alerts or messages about why it was taken offline?  The addamm.log should have more info about a device going offline.  Feel free to post the log file here and we can help you decipher it.

Right click the tape drive and select "online" to bring it back online so you can do further testing.

If you find this is a solution for the thread, please mark it as such.
