tape drives not showing up for 2nd node of clustered master

Created: 23 Jan 2013 • Updated: 24 Jan 2013 | 22 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

hello, i have a clustered master server of 2 nodes. nbu 7.5. vcs 5.1. and rhel6. 4 other media servers on rhel6.

the problem am facing is: i see in the docs, that for the failover thingie, i need to set drives on both nodes. as of now. 1 primary node is able to see and was able to configure but node2 of the master is showing up as media server in gui though nbemmcmd gives it as master. kindly please advice here on how to set the node2 to see drives too. please see screenshots below and output.

[root@master01]# ./nbemmcmd -listhosts
NBEMMCMD, Version: 7.5
The following hosts were found:
server nbu.domain.com
cluster nbu.domain.com
master master01.domain.com
media media01.domain.com
media media02.domain.com
media media04.domain.com
media media03.domain.com
master master02.domain.com
Command completed successfully.

thanks.

To configure tape devices in clustered master server, bring the NetBackup service online and go through Device Configuration Wizard on each node. Switch the service to node2 and run wizard.

thanks. i just figured this, that the services are not running. can you please advice me here. should i just up the services and i would be able to do, or there are some other things that needs to be done. would this affect the active node thing of my cluster?

16ris10's picture

i see in the device config guide. page 86. it says first configure the active (which is already done) then point 3. "move the NetBackup group to another node" refresh and configure through wizard. Repeat for every node.

no the key thing is: how to move the nbu group to another node? what command? vcs thing or netbackup thing?

Do you have enough experience to manage VCS? If not, it is hard to administrate clustered master - you need to switch the service group between nodes while patching, troubleshooting and etc..

To swtich the service group to another node, run "/opt/VRTSvcs/bin/hagrp -switch service_group -to node".

ok, so i run this command and then do the configuration. is this the only command? i would give another hour to this, unless i hear from you on this. i will proceed then with what you have posted.

.. perhaps already you are seeing an issue.

Devices have to be configured on each node separately, as you know.

It should be a simple case of failing over, and running wizard.

From what I see, you are having too many issue on a brand new install.

I've sent you a PM (well will have done in a min)

There are no additional steps to switch the service group. Run "hagrp -switch service_group -to node", then monitor status of service group using "hastatus", "hastatus -sum" or so.

But seeing your other post, as Martin suggested, you have some issues and this clustered master could not be configured correctly. You have to confirm this cluster configuration first.

edited. I have posted the rpely on that thread where you asked the question..

NetBackup is clustered as nbu_group service group. Run "hagrp -switch nbu_group -to master02" to switch NetBackup service to master02.

No, it did not failover correctly:

  nbu_group       master01           Y          N               ONLINE
  nbu_group       master02           Y          N               OFFLINE|FAULTED

Online was attempted on master02 but failed. nbu_group then failed back to master01.

You need to check /var/VRTSvcs/log/engine_A.log for the reason for failed failover attempt.

Maybe original installation was not 100% successful after all?

You should really forget about additional media servers, devices, any sort of config until you can successfully failover between nodes.
Remember if you manually add entries to bp.conf, you have to do it on both nodes.

You need to convince your management to book you on a 5-day VCS training course, or else download the manuals from SORT and start reading...

ok, ill forget about other media servers for now, and yes i have added same entries in bp.conf on both the nodes. yes, i just posted that engine log in the other thread. it point to mount point error. its all story for training and stuff. i need to get this thing working today actually. is it possible to just re-install like that? passing all the parameters again and not removing the old one?

Marianne's picture

It is not possible to reinstall without completely uninstalling on both nodes, but this will need removal of nbu_group in VCS as well.

Maybe it is just the mount point that is missing on node 2?

Can you manually move diskgroups between nodes and mount the filesystem? Win nbu_group in offline state, of course.

im quite postive, this is case here..

i don't know how to do that. :(
