Tape Library problem

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hello,

We have recently installed a new SL500 Tape Library. It was delivered with 1 tape and all tests runned well. Later we loaded it with 40 more tapes and then the problems started. First, ts SL Console was not accessible so we oppened a service call and a technician went on-site and fixed something related to the library door. Then SL Console was accessible and shows no errors. However, our admin reports that NetBackup still cannot use the library reporting this error:

MachineState = active for disk jobs (12)  <---- unable to attach Tape with EMM database

Since I have no experience with NetBackup and tape libraries, can somebody help me to understand what is the problem and how can we fix it. Also what additional commands should we run to get more details on this problem?

Thank you very much for your help!

Ivan

hi,

as you are saying library maintance was happend, did you see the robot and Drives in OS level after maintance.

check if you are able to see the devices in OS level and also in scan level.

/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/scan  -> check if you are able to see the robots and Drives .

/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/tpautoconf -t

and also check if you are able to do the robtest

/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/robtest.

Check for expired demo license.
Verify that permanent license key exist on this server for Library based tape drive(s).

Concur with all the above, if everything checks out try running this command on the master server:

nbemmcmd -updatehost -machinestateop set_tape_active -machinename <mediaservername> -machinetype media -masterserver <masterservername>

Thank you for all your posts! I will try all the suggestions and let you know the result.

Mariane, how to verify the licenses?

My reply may be slow since I do not have access to the device and have to do all through the administrator.

revaroo's picture

Under netbackup/bin/admincmd there is a command called 'get_license_key' this will allow you to view and add licenses. There is an option to  view active keys and all keys. Check for any that have expired.

You never told us which OS on your server?

If Windows, check in the GUI under Help -> License Keys or from cmd:
bpminlicense -verbose
(in ...\netbackup\bin\admincmd)

Any ideas? Or other checks?

You need NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive license key in order to use the robotic tape drives in NBU. It is a separate line item on your license key certificate (not included in NetBackup Enterprise Server license).

You can see that this description/feature appears nowhere in license key output.
No idea how it worked previously...

Standalone tape drives can be used without this license key.

SOLUTION
Ivan Bogdanov's picture

Thank you very much Marianne! I will address this issue and let you know if it resolved the problem. Is that license comming with the Tape Library or we have to purchase it separately? Who will provide it - Symantec (NetBackup) or SUN/Oracle (Tape Drive hardware).

Marianne's picture

It is purchased from Symantec.

Please check with the person in your company who holds your license certificates - this robot: TLD (11) seems to one of many (12) robots in this environment. You probably have sufficient Library Based Tape Drive licenses and you were just not given the license key.
