This typically is a result of missing prerequisites for the task component.  Check to be sure you have all your .NET and IIS prerequisite components installed.  Then send a basic inventory...once that has been sent, run a Delta Membership update.  Also, please be sure all your patches are up-to-date and you are not running .NET 4 as we have had issues with .NET 4 being installed.

    Good Luck!

    Hi,

Please take a look at video which demonstrates how to install TS to 2008.R2: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/videos/rolling-out-task-server-itms-video-part-2-windows-2008-r2

Also, please check if you have temp directory on your server and access to this directory available for the use under that TS install is running.

    Thank you,

    Alex.

    Hi Alex,

I see that there was already resolved similar issue in this thread, where was same error output on attempt to install/upgrade Task Server https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/hf4-upgrade-task-service-install-issue

And as Alex said about temp folder with required permissions http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/cant-install-some-programs-cant-create-output-file/c915e349-e599-484d-bb2b-49dc9ee6fbd8

    Thanks,

    IP.

    Hi Jms97

There is no .NET 4 newly installed on the server because we were using this server from long back for package and task server.

For some reason we uninstall and resintalled Altiris agent after we had face this issue.

We have not madhe any change in IIS or .net

    Hi CBZ9104,

Let's clarify the exact scenario and I will try to reproduce the problem on my server.

    So, the steps were:

    1. Install PS 7.5

    2. Install TS 7.5

    3. Uninstall SMA (manually or by policy?)

    4. Install PS

    5. Install TS - TS install failure.

    Please correct/add any missing steps.

    Thank you,

    Alex.

    Hi

    The steps were:

    1. Install PS 7.5

    2. Install TS 7.5

    3. Suddently after months Task Server does not registered with itself or any server.

    4. We tried to  uninstall and reinstall only task service (manually and by Policy both)

    5. We tried to uninstall and reinstall complete altiris agent but package servcie is install fine and packages copied on server properly but only task service is not able to install by manuall as well as by policy.

Tried to install schedule policy but still same and if tried to installa manually we faced error

    Hi CBZ9104,

Thank you for provided steps, going to try on my setup.

Meanwhile: does manual TS and altiris agent uninstall processes includes some additional steps, like TS web-directory removal in IIS or it's just an msi launch?

We have a KB210807http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH210807 and I'm wondering could it be some incarnation of it in slightly different forms on your environment.

    Thank you,

    Alex.

    Update:

I cannot reproduce original problem with error "unable to create or write to the output file" after several install-uninstall sequences of TS and Altiris agent.

I can reproduce problem with TS functionality, if TS web-directory removed manually after TS uninstall, but it seems like this is a different issue.

Currently there are three most common issues with the TS install in the field:

    1. TS setup process from previous install stays in running state and blocks new install, even new package cannot be downloaded. Computer restart and new schedule for the TS install policy should help in such case; issue fixed in 7.5.HF5.

    2. IIS Appool used by TS modified: switched to "Integrated mode" or switched to Framework different from 2.0 or "Enable 32-bit Application" set to "True". In 7.5.SP1 TS will create and configure its own appool.

    3. Already mentioned problem with manual removal of IIS ClientTaskServer directory after TS uninstall and before the new install. In such case TS installed but non-functional until corresponding web-directory re-created manually and atrshost service restarted. Fixed in 7.5.SP1.

Sometimes issues with file creation could indicate problems with HDD, so it could be worth to run scandisk on a server.

    Thank you,

    Alex.
