If you want to ensure that your test SMP mimicks your oproduction SMP's state, you should do the folloiwng:
1. Shutdown the production SMP server.
2. Take a server backup of it.
3. Take a database backup.
4. Start the production SMP server again.
5. Create a VM from the server bacdkup.
6. Place the VM into an isolated test lab along with the database backup.
This will allow you to test your product installs and upgrades against an exact copy of production. If the SMP is a VM already then this makes it easier as you can simply shut it down and take a copy of the VM along with a database backup.
Normally customers can only take a database backup, which means that they do not know have the install/upgrade will effect the actual server at the OS and application level. The closest you can get to that then is to consult your ITIL doucmentation and build the test SMP from the very first version that went into production, and run through all hotfix installs and product upgrades that were done in production.
