Is there anyway to manage software license of application that has to have multiple packages in SWS

Could you please tell if there is any way to manage software licenses of applications, that require different packages for OS (XP, Vista, Windows 7) in SWS ?

Here is the use case, for example:

A customer owns 84 concurrent licenses of Adobe CS, and they create three packages for Windows 7, Vista and XP.

You, however, have to allocate 84 licenses in these three packages, such as 28, 28, 28 or 50, 17, 17 anyway in SWS.

Is there any way you can control the total 84 licenses as the total number of 7, Vista and XP in SWS ?

Thank you in advance, KiSang

Hi KiSang,

In SWS we support 2 types of licenes like "Application installation licenses" which will check for the no.of licenses set in the Manage license screen and streams the package based on the number you have set.  There is another option called concurrent license, which will will be validated only when the user launches the application and not when streaming.

What is the option is Customer looking for? They want to restrict no.of installation or install as many and restrict only the no.of concurrent users that can launch the application at any given point?

Can you tell me why do they need to create 3 different packages. Most of the packages created in XP should work fine in higher OS version.  Is there a way they can try streaming the package created in XP in other 2 OS and if it works fine, they can use this single package for all the OS and license controll will not be complex.

Suppose, if it doesn't work and they need separate package for separate OS what exactly are they looking for?  Are they looking for allocating 7 license each for Vista and XP and rest of the license to win7 OS?

Ganesh,

Thank you  for your help.

The customer is looking for the option to restrict only the no. of concurrent users that can launch the application at any given point.

They are assuming that it does not work and need three pacakges. They are looking for allocationg the total number of concurrnet licenses to their end users who are using  the three OS. You cannot tell which users are using which OS at any given point.

I was told that you can solve the issue by using License Decriptor of SWS. Is it right ?

Thank you, KiSang

KiSang,

You can set concurrent license for a package in stremaing console under Provisioning | Manage license | click the Edit link under Maximum available tab. In the popup page, enter the concurrent license for each package as you wish.

This will not restrict no.of licenses and only restrict no.of users concurrently accessing that particular package.

In this scenario, they have 3 packages and 80 concurrent licenses which they need to split up accordingly.  Are they looking for allocating the licenses to specified set of users and machines or any user can stream this package in any given host?

Ganesh,

>Are they looking for allocating the licenses to specified set of users and machines or any user can stream this package in any given host?

They are looking for allocating the licenses to any user can stream. Let's say, they own 80 concurrent licenses of Adobe CS and prepare three pacakges for XP, Vista and 7 in their SWS server.

At 9:00 AM, there are  30 users of XP, 20 users of Vista, and 30 users of Windoes 7. No one can use Adobe CS any more.

At 13:00 PM, there are 1users of XP,  30 users of Vista, and 49 users of Windows 7. No one can use Adove CS any more.

I was told that you can do this by using License  Descriptor that is explained in SWS  6.1 SP7 MP1 Admin Guide:       http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC4601

License Descriptor (P205)

The name of the identifier that holds information on packages included, license consumption and maximum number of licenses available, for a single or a group of packages that are bundled together as a single entity.

Grouping packages into a license descriptor (P211)

Packages with similar usage can be bundled together to ease administrative
procedures.

Is this the one we can use to solve the issue ?

Thank you in advance, KiSang
