  • 1.  Is there cloud in SEP's future?

Does anyone know if cloud/community-based detection is coming to SEP? I know Norton 2010 has Download Insight that does exactly that (http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Protection-Blog/New-Feature-for-Norton-Internet-Security-2010-Download-Insight/ba-p/113827) but anyone's aware of similar plans for SEP?
It would be nice to had this extra level of protection, especially when  TruScan and NTP are close to useless in their current form.
    Thanks!

    Hi,

generally the two products are designed for different markets with different needs especially regarding the reliability and the false positive tollerance. If the feature implemented in Norton 2010 will result reliable for the enterprises' market, it could be implemented in SEP as well but not in a short period.

    Regards,

    Giuseppe,
Thank you for your reply. So it looks as when the rest of anti-virus world is moving forward with integrating cloud-based detection for an improved protection, Symantec is sticking with signature-based detection only? Any reasons why?

    Hi Dimitri

I agree with you about truescan that it is useless but NTP I am a great fan of it . It does provide additional security to my networked PCs. If you want to se what NTP does just enable its notification and connect your pc to internet and you will see what it is doing in background.

A little birdie once told me that Cloud Based Detection for SEP is in the offing, but not just yet. There is extensive research going on w.r.t. this, and they'd come to market with an offering once it has been very very rigorously tested. The initial concept dates to around a year or so back, by taking on cue Salesforce.com as a great exapmple for Cloud based services.

ANd trust me, when SYmantec goes to market with such a Cloud based detection in the future, most of the other vendors would then start discovering that they've let some or the other loopholes in their offerings.

I'd really jump at the prospect of being amongst the first to test this, as my work entails working extensively on Cloud Computing environments.

All I can say is, wait and watch.....
