  • 1.  Is there a reason to reboot PGP Universal Server?

    Posted Feb 07, 2013 11:55 AM

I am running PGP Universal Server version 3.2.0 MP3 (build 2317). We schedule network maintenance night per month and one of the tasks is rebooting all servers (physical & virutal) in our data center.  I have never had to reboot the PGP Universal Server for any reason, so I'm not sure if there is a specific procedure to reboot the Unversal Server, or even if it is necessary.

I know the server can be rebooted using the Universal Server Administration (System Settings), but is that the only way to reboot the server?  Can it be done from the server console?  Does it matter which way it is rebooted?  Is there a reason why or why not this server should be rebooted on a monthly basis?

    Thanks!!

To be honest, not really.  PGP Servers are very hardened, the only reason to reboot them is when they ask due to policy change or upgrade.  But when you do reboot, do it from the server console, let it reboot gracefully.

Thanks for the response!  I figured that was the case as I have never had to reboot, except in the case of an upgrade/update.

Since I am not familiar with the Universal Server OS, is there a specific command to use to reboot?

There is a command, but you need to gain SSH access to it first, so first of all to gain access to SSH via putty:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH149673

Then the documented commands are here:

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH149336

The only reason you would do it this way is if the webserver messed up and couldnt get access to the web portal.  The restarting is modular theres no 1 command to restart everything

Thanks for your help!  I have removed that particular server from the list of servers that need reboots monthly.  I appreciate the information and the links you provided! yes
