Is there an update of if and/or when SEP will be available for OS X?

Mike Burlison's picture

We have SEP deployed but there is a growing percentage of our user base running MAC OS X.  I realize the older SAV 10 is still available for OS X and Linux machines but I cannot find an update from Symantec for moving these to SEP.  Everything I find is nearly a year old.
With the JAHLAV-C exploit making some security news recently, upper management is wondering when Symantec will offer a managable client for these other operating systems.

Currently there is no client support for MAC OS X. This may be included in SEP 12 Enterprise due out next year, but that is just a guess.

Maybe be included in SEP 12?

Is there any definitive plans to have a client for OS X?  The big concern, from my boss, is the recent JAHLAV-C exploit making the rounds in the news.  None of us are having much luck finding anything on the Symantec site regarding this issue.  Of course he is getting annoucements from other vendors which raises the concern.

Thanks.

Right now, SAV for Macintosh

Right now, SAV for Macintosh 10.2 will run on and protect OS X 10.4.11 and higher.  I know there's Mac integration for managing Macs in the SEPM targeted for early next year but there are no firm dates, and I don't know if that includes a release SEP for Mac.

As for the "JAHLAV-C" threat (it is not exploiting a vulnerability), information I'm seeing points to a lot of press about it back in June of 09.  It seems to be associated with a specific 'dark alley' website, and the user has to install the threat on purpose (usually under the misapprehension that they are installing a media player or a video codec).  It is not a name I can locate in the Security Response writeups, but it apparently changes DNS information, and sounds a lot like this threat: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-110101-2320-99

Regardless, best practices are your best bet: don't visit "dark alley" websites :) and only update video codecs / Flash or Quicktime players from their respective originating sites.

SEP for Mac will be

SEP for Mac will be available. Probably will take some more time to release. still I am not sure if Mac can be managed by SEPM for Windows.

SEP and Macs

Macs cannot currently be managed by a Windows-based SEPM.

"Macintosh computers need to be protected with a different product, Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition for Macintosh, intended for use with Macintosh computers and managed with its own management console."

From 'Can Symantec Endpoint Protection be installed on a Macintosh computer?'

> Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007112815594448

As I understand it, SEP integration for Macs is due in the 2nd quarter of next year.

"...Mac OS X 10.6 will also be supported in Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.x, due in Q2 2010."

From 'Compatibility with Symantec AntiVirus for Macintosh 10.x and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard'

Hope this helps,
