Hi, I am using SMTP Mail Security. I have two questions:

    1) Is it possible to hold suspect viruses forever until deleted or released? Otherwise it releases them and does not count them as a virus. I have to manually check every 24 hours which is a pain.

    2) I have two SMTP Mail Security servers where the local domains and policies change often. Is there a way to sync settings between them or is it better to write a script that dumps certian parts of the db and copies them across?

    3) Is Symantec planning to keep SMTP Mail Security, if so when is the next release (6.0) coming?

    Thanks.

    Hello,

    1) You would need to send it somewhere other than the suspect virus quarantine. One suggestion we often give is to set an action of "Archive" and "Delete". This allows you to set up an email address to send the messages to and will get rid of the original. You would have to set up something external to be able to collect the messages though.

    2) No unfortunately there is not a way to sync control centers. However, remember that you can have multiple scanners connected to a single control center. If you are going across a WAN, this becomes less workable because that is a lot of traffic between. But if they are in the same physical network, it may be an option.

    3) The current roadmap is undetermined as far as I know. I don't have further details. I do know that much of the focus is on our Hardware and Virtual Appliances. This is the way a lot of companies are going and so a lot of effort has been put into this avenue.

    I hope this helps!

    Tom

Thanks for the reply. In regards to the traffic, do you have a rough estimate? They are on a WAN, depends on the traffic it might be worth it.

Second server is a secondary mx, that's all.

Do you happen to know what appliance I'd look at to filter mail for customers. Currently I am using SMTP Mail Security to filter mail for multipule customers then forward it on to their mail servers. Is there a good applicance for doing the same thing?

    Hello again,

For what we would be sending, it really depends on your settings. If you are quarantining spam, doing a lot of reporting, and so on we really don't like to suggest that you have a scanner remote to the Control Center. We see more issues with that than what good there is from doing it.

Not to say it isn't possible, but you would need to trim what the appliance is doing and keep an eye on usage.

For the appliance, the software is fairly similar to what you are already used to with SMTP 5. So if you are setup how you want it to work now, the appliance should be able to do the same. As well as have more functionality. There are multiple Hardware choices for the Appliance including a Virtualized version that currently runs on ESX.

Being in support though, you would probably be better served to talk to a sales engineer for specifics on offerings. I believe you should even be able to do a "try and buy" for the appliance to see how you like it.

    Thanks!
