Time for backup system state on windows Server 2008 - Performance OK?
Created: 28 Jul 2010 | 10 comments
I need to speed up the time to backup system state. Right now it takes about an hour to backup the system state from my Windows 2008 servers. There's an amount of 15GB of data in the system state.
I would like to compare my backuptime with others. Can anyone tell me how long it takes in your environment to backup the system state?
The backuptime to save the systemstate of my Windows 2003 Server is just 3 minutes.

The backup of Win 2008 System state takes around 20-25 mins. Have you installed AD on your Win 2008 box ?

Yes! Its a domainnetwork with about 20 Server. Most of the servers are virtual machines.
The Backup Server is a physical machine. The time to backup this one is about 35 minutes.
There's also an exchange server 2007 in the AD.
Do you have an Antivirussolution on your machine?
Hi Nutshell,
It's a situation like: How long is a piece of string?
Depending on what you have running on that server, how big the System State etc. is, and what you are backing up too, if it is local or across a LAN (100MB/1GB), speeds can vary.
that time for your Windows Server 2008 servers is probably OK, considering the amount of files and entries in SYstem State. I don't think you can compare it to Windows Server 2003.
Your speed is about right! You can try tweaking your tape drive for a bit of extra speed, and making sure that you have no maintenance tasks running on the server that might interfere during the backup process.
Laters!

its a known issue refer http://support.veritas.com/docs/336283

Thanks for that input.
Maybe deselecting to follow the junction points will speed up the process. But I feel not very good to do this.
I mean what will happen if the system crashes?
I've recognized that SP4 is ready for install, maybe this will double the backup speed ;-)
Anyone has the same Performance Issues?
System state backup on 2008
System state backup on 2008 and R2 sucks.
We went from 1-10 minutes on 2003 to 60 minutes on 2008/R2. There is more data each night 7-GB for 2008 compared with 1GB for 2003 and it backsup much slower around 70-120MB/s compared to 300-1200MB/s for 2003.
It has added massively to our backup times, We have 80 live servers with around 30 now on Windows 2008R2 and our daily backups are over running all the time now as our backup jobs take collectively around 30 hours longer or aroung 6 hours in real time which is causing some pain.
...I don't think this is a BE
...I don't think this is a BE issue, but more likely the way that the Windows Server 2008 registry is designed. I have seen a comment on this that went into quite a bit of details a couple of days ago.
It seems this is what causes the slow backups...data itself on a Win2K8 server is fine being backed up, and if it WAS the software, you'd have very slow backups there too...

We are aware of the issue
We are aware of the issue (and have been for some time) it is however proving difficult to isolate the cause as we can't reproduce and know it does not affect all customers.
One part of our current research is what is the total byte count and how many files are located in the structure that starts at C:\WINDOWS\WINSXS
Which virus scanner are you
Which virus scanner are you using? I have the same problem with the backup of "System State" since I've installed new Version of Trendmicro Business Security.
We run McAfee Antivirus and
We run McAfee Antivirus and it take forever. This is on BE 2010 R2...
