Tips on how to monitor for Low disk Space

Lars0's picture

I have enabled the TASK on NS 6.0.6074 under Notification Policies --> LOW DISK SPACE to run the query every hour, but it looks like it look up the free diskspace from the results from inventory scans. I do not have inventory scans running on my servers every hour, so I keep getting notification emails about "Low disk Space" on a server every hour, untill I have run another inventory scan after clearing up more free space.

Is there a better way to monitor our servers for low on disk space via NS tasks?

Lars0,

The Task Management function, with the full Task Management Pack installed, allows for quicker running of inventory tasks. Altiris also has a monitor solution, which allows you to customize thresholds. You could also change the threshold you get notified, also that just masks the problem.

Let us know if you own Monitor, or have tried Task Management.

Cheers,

Jim

I have installed both the full Task Management pack and the Monitoring solutions, but unless I run the inventory tasks more frequently, I do feel the task named: Free Disk Space is not very effective to use.

I am more interested in hearing if someone really is using this taks to monitor free disk space on drives, or you have other third party monitoring tools on your network?.

I really like the Altiris product, and just trying to utilize it as much as possible.

fair enough, and I have no issues leaving the topic open for discussion. Also, take a look, and feel free to post the topic over at http://altirigos.com

Most of the topics here, even though it's user based, revolve around troubleshooting for Altiris\NpoS products.

You are correct in your assessment. That task is only as good as your inventory data.

 Hello Lars0, I would suggest

 Hello Lars0,

I would suggest using Monitor Solution to Monitor the Disk Space in Real-Time on your Servers, this would also allow you additional trigger and Alert notification possibilities.

You can also setup a new

You can also setup a new Inventory "program" with corresponding .ini files that only runs the AeXMachInv.ini with only the "Inv AeX HW Logical Disk" dataclass being collected (assuming that is the table you're using).  Then you set this Inventory Task to run on an hourly basis, with a very low impact to your servers since you're running a single Inventory collection.  This is a several step process which is at least partially documented in the KB, and I can give some tips if necessary.  But as Joseph said, if you have Monitor solution this is really the kind of thing it is designed for; what you're talking about would be the "poor man's Monitor Solution" :).

just in case you would be

just in case you would be running a windows 2003 server you could use this.

Create an Alert in System Monitor to Track Free Disk Space

1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Performance.
2. Expand Performance Logs and Alerts.
3. Right-click Alerts, and then click New Alert Settings.
4. In the New Alert Settings box, type a name for the new alert (for example, Free disk space), and then click OK.

The AlertName dialog box appears, in which you configure settings for the alert that you created.
5. Click the General tab, and then in the Comment box, type Monitors free disk space on logical drive.
