Total confusion on installation of new slf file

  • 1.  Total confusion on installation of new slf file

    Posted Mar 14, 2014 01:45 PM

We use external technical support but they've not been able to accomplish the task of installing the latest slf file from Symantec.

We've been running without protection for 8 weeks!

I looked at the process and downloaded what I think are the necessary files

    Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.4a_Part1_Installation_EN.exe

    Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.4_Part2_Tools_EN.exe

I have the zip file from Symantec and that's it!

I don't want to initiate a process that messes up the server

We have an Active Directory Machine and a File Server - both are protected by ver 12.1.1000.157 RU1 - both in the same Domain

What I don't understand (because I've done nothing other than download these files) is that Live Update still appears to work.

At least it downloads files and then reports the correct (ie today's date)

I tried calling Symantec but I am afraid that was hopeless so I thought I'd ask the forum.

So what I'd be very grateful to have is an idiot's primer on the steps to take!

On the AD machine Symantec is installed on c:\program files\symantec with a sub-directory "Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager"

On the File server Symantec is also installed on the root drive but there is no sub-directory

    Thanks

    J

If you just need to input the slf file, follow the steps outlined here:

you want to updated the slf file? or update the SEPM to 12.1.4?

if you are using enterprise verion it will not stop you from downloading definiton files

    types of enforcement

When the license goes out of compliance the SEP product goes into enforcement mode. There are two types of enforcement

    1)  Hard Enforcement: SEP 12.1 Small Business Edition

    • Content update downloads stop for both server and clients. In Small Business Edition it's 1:1 mapping with CAT server.
    • UI changes and log notifications are started.

    2)  Soft Enforcement: SEP 12.1 Enterprise Edition

    •  Content update downloads continue from all the sources.
    •  UI changes and log notifications are started.

Hi Rafeeq - thanks very much for quick response.

I am not sure which we are using.

I have no idea how I can find out either!

Open your SEPM and go to Help >> About, it will show the version and type

What you have downloaded is the latest version to upgrade your manager and client from 12.1 to 12.1.4

if you want to iimiport an license file , check these articles

Hi Brian - thanks for speedy response.

Both links lead to a point where you are supposedly going to run a Wizard but there is absolutely no file menu or any sort of way that I can see at any rate to launch a wizard to install the slf file.

Sorry to be so vague but therein lies the problem.

I wonder if running the two files that I downloaded would install the necessary wizard (one was abs huge (1.7GB)

As you already mentioned that your Ad and file server are using 12.1.1000.157

the first thing you need to fix is to import the license, once the status is green on the SEPM, you can later think of upgrading to sep 12.1.4

forget about upgrading the systems to latest versions now, all you need to fix is the licensing slf file, here is the link to do it

So you already downloaded the latest version, which is fine. But you need to get the license file, did you receive this via email? Once you get it, you can input into the SEPM. Than once this is done you can begin the upgrade process.

Upgrading or migrating to Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.4 (RU4)/12.1.4a (ru4a)

Hi Rafeeq - I am quite happy keeping it simple and staying with 12.1 but there is no wizard (at least not that I can see) that will do the simple job on installing the slf file.

We have registered the file via the Symantec Portal.

I am beginning to see why the IT contractors we use were stuck!

All I should have to do is find some what of installing the slf file.

Maybe I ought to redownload 12.1 and reinstall it?

Are you logged into the SEPM?

If so go to Admin page >> Licenses >> Activate License

    This wil start the wizard

  • 12.  RE: Total confusion on installation of new slf file

    Posted Mar 14, 2014 02:10 PM

No, you just need to download the slf file and import it on your existing SEPM 12.1

    nothing else is needed

that slf files is harldy of some 100KB file )

once you register your serial number you wil get an slf file, follow this doc to install it on sepm

    Hi Brian,

Yes I already received the licence file :-

Thank you for registering your Symantec products. Your registration details are available below: SYMC ENDPOINT PROTECTION 12.1 5 USER RENEWAL BASIC 12 MONTHS SMB

There was a zip file attached with the slf file

I downloaded 12.1.4 because it was the first on the list - that was stupid - I should go back and download 12.1 (assuming it still exists) and then in effect reinstall it.

12.1 RU1 won't be available for download as that was a few versions ago. 12.1.4a is the latest so go with that.

First thing you can do is get that slf file activated in the SEPM. Just follow the steps I mentioned above.

From there you can upgrade your SEPM to the latest version

I don't know! The only way in to the program that I can see is the sys tray icon but there are no controls that appear relevant to what I need to do.

    Status

    Scan for threats

    Change settings

    View quarantine

    View logs

    Live update...

This is what surprises me there is no management console

  • 16.  RE: Total confusion on installation of new slf file

    Posted Mar 14, 2014 02:25 PM

Yea what you're looking at there is the SEP client itself.

Do you have access to the SEPM, this is where the slf needs to be input.

If you don't have a SEPM, than clients will just be unmanaged but I guess we need to first find out if you have a SEPM to manage all the clients :)

  • 17.  RE: Total confusion on installation of new slf file

    Posted Mar 14, 2014 02:26 PM

Sorry Rafeeq I have no SEPM management console that I can see on the machine - if you look at my reply to Brian who has also kindly taken the time to reply you will see that I have no means of doing anything.  Jon

open the SEP console, click on help and support,

    select troubleshooting

do you see server offline or Self Managed , if self managed, then here is no console,  just follow this

    Licensing an unmanaged client

If the client is unmanaged you can still license it:

I do not think I have and that's the problem!

Looking at Program Files all that appears is "Endpoint Protection" which opens up the client.

This is true on both the AD and the File Server machine

Frankly I cannot understand how the boys installed the thing in the first place!

Should I try downloading the SEPM and installing it on the AD machine?

Clients can be installed as unmanaged, they just need to be configured individually instead of centrally :)

If you go to Help >>Troubleshooting, under server does it show connected to a SEPM or self-managed?

Jon, you are getting confused, SEPM is a console where you can install and manage clients centrally from a single location, if clients are installed as unmanged / self managed without console then you need to add the slf file manually on each SEP client which was installed.

    Posted Mar 14, 2014 02:37 PM

Ah Ha!  Thanks Rafeeq - as you suspected it is Self Managed.

I looked at the link :-

Step 1 - I have the current slf file obtain from Symantec

    Step 2 - I have located the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\CurrentVersion\inbox

At present that foler is empty

I will now copy the current slf file into that folder

    Watch this space!

Hi Rafeeq - it worked - I am amazed at how easy this was!  Our IT contractors (who have been perfect for everything else I have to say) already spent several hours trying to sort this out...  Thanks for all your help very much appreciated.  Jon

You can also do split solutions for multiple posts.

Hi Brian I love to do it but don't know how.  I thought I saw "Solution" but it seems to have disappeared.

  • 32.  RE: Total confusion on installation of new slf file

    Posted Mar 19, 2014 05:16 AM

You need to clear your current solution, then you will be able to mark split solution

  • 33.  RE: Total confusion on installation of new slf file

    Posted Mar 19, 2014 05:37 AM

    I am fogged!

    Cleared solution - OK

But do not see where I can give credit for help.

All I see is "Actions" on the RHS which offer "Reply" or "Mark as Offensive"

I'd cetainly like to mark this page for others because - before I went on this Forum - I spent a few hours looking for the solution and I'd be glad to help others...

Now it has appeared!  I suppose because I had marked it in only one place before (not understanding Split Solution) all those controls disappeared.  Now they are back I will do the necessary and thanks again to you and Rafeeq.

For split solution, it just brings you to another screen which brings up all the posts and allows you to select the multiple ones that helped ;)
