    Hi All,

Is it possible to track installed softwares based on license keys.

So that we can track if anyone installed a pirated version.

It's possible to use Asset Management Suite along with Client Management Suite to tie # of installed to # of owned, based on license purchases you enter into AMS.  But it's not possible right now to associate a computer with installed software inventory, and a license inventory with that software inventory, if that makes sense.

    Does this answer your question?

Along the same kind of lines....

Is it possibly to add the serial key when you create a licence purchase? In this way we could keep record of where each licence key goes and who has it, so when they leave we know what licence is free.

    Thanks a lot,

    Anne

The licenses don't go anywhere.  The software is what's installed on a computer.  So AMS and CMS are going to allow you to associate licenses with software products, and the software products with components, and then inventory data is going to tell you where that software is installed.  You'll know from the AMS license import how many you own, and you'll know from the inventory report how many you use.  This will tell you if you're over or under.  In regards to a user leaving, you should address this through a documented policy on how to handle employee terminations.  It's part of IT's responsibility to manage the user and computer lifecycle from provisioning through maintenance to retirement.

Depending on the applications in use, you may be able to harvest the serial numbers using Custom Inventory scripts.  We have done this for a few applications (in particular, AutoCAD and VMWare Workstation) which have license keys stored in the registry at "well known" locations (or locations that can be searched for the key).  We have also created scripts to parse license files and extract the key data that way.  I was considering using "Magical Jellybean KeyFinder" to dump any found keys to a .csv file, then process that .csv using a script or Custom Ivnentory...but never got around to it (also, our A/V solution flags MJKF as a grayware/malware and quarantines it...which makes using it difficult without getting our security team to exclude it).
