Training for Service Desk 7
With the launch of the new Service Desk 7 product imminent, the existing Altiris Service Desk community will be waiting to get their hands on this all new capability. Allowing for the first time within a Symantec Framework true ITIL process driving best pract efficiencies through a customisable interface. However once launched, the word on the street from within Symantec is that the only training that will be made available will be a course on the online training portal.
With a product that has a simpler outlook, for example SEP this would be a workable solution, but surely with a complex product like SD7 which has technical support, administration and customised end user requirements I'm not convinced that will be enough.
I have my views on the scop and structure but what do you guys in the wider community think??

I agree...Its hard now to find training for Help Desk Soultions.
There is a training for
There is a training for Workflow and since the main engine behind SD 7 is Workflow, I would recommend to take that training.

Workflow will help but...
Rob is correct basic workflow will help understand and go some way to enabling the implementation of the product, but your Servicedesk or support analyst would gain no benefit, certainly not at the cost of Symantec training.
The orginal poster is
The orginal poster is incorrect in the training that will be released for ServiceDesk 7. There will be two roducts as a part of the ServiceDesk release from Symantec Education. One will be e-learning and one will be instructor-lead training.
For those that already subscribe to e-learning this should be available as part of your e-learning subscription.
For those interested in instructor lead training (ILT) there will be a 5-day SErviceDesk 7 course. How do I know the information about this? Two reason: as an Educational partner ITS will be delivering the 5-day course (working on scheduling or first class Nov. 1) and secondly I am member of the curriculum advisory board.
ServiceDesk 7 training was something requested heavily by both partners and customers and Symantec has changed thier mind and is delivering this course.
The course will cover using ServiceDesk, installing ServiceDesk, customing ServiceDesk within the ServiceDesk portal and customizing Service Desk within Workflow designer.
I would echo Rob's thoughts that a workflow class will be nice, we at ITS have one scheduled in October (http://www.itsdelivers.com/training_details.php?class_index=1251749) The Workflow Foundations course will help you custom ServiceDesk further then just the ServiceDesk training course.
Also within ServiceDesk you will be licensed for Workflow to edit/customize all of the ServieDesk workflows within the product. To connect outside of ServiceDesk/Altiris you will need to purchase Workflow.
Hope that helps clear things up, drop me a note w/ questions.

Mixed messages....
As always the details coming out from Symantec are confusing, if there is classroom based training planned, as Jonathan mentioned then that will be excellent. My source was from the head of training in the UK and they were unaware of any plans.
That being said, this is not the place to be getting into match of who's source is closer to the truth. The plain fact and the reason for my question is that this is the first attempt for Symantec at launching a Service Management application and as such the approach taken to date does not exactly fit the Service Management market place. For example if a medium to large company adopts the technology do we honestly feel that the courses that may or may not be available will satisfy the requirement for training for the 150 IT analysts within the organisation.
What does the community think, is Symantec's approach to training for this product strangling it before it launches??
I agree w/ Hobbsy
I think the problem is exactly what you stated. I feel a lot of times that Symantec as a whole doesn't understand Altiris and this launches to me demonstrates that. I feel a lot of the greaor Symantec doesn't communicate well within itself.

I can confirm, BUZZ around SD7 was poor, and internal COM low
I see a Symantec mid-market Sales was giving a "no go" on 1 September, using Symantec solutions, for a customer request with:
All were ITIL questions...
After meeting this guy 15 September, I learn him to switch from "no go" to "go ahead" since 4th September...
Yes, I believe probably this guy was not reading & following correctly all internal communications... But how many does? And do they can handle all?
Who at Symantec was knowing the SD7 launch on 4th September ?
I can tell you not a lot: And not the Webmaster@symantec.com, the official "press" URL http://www.symantec.com/business/Service-desk, is still the same as before 3th September; no banner, no news, no update, no download links, no doc links... Features are correct, but not the hardware requirements...
An important release, 2.5 years waiting for this... Perhaps it was such a long time waiting, no body was waiting any more, except some of us ;-)
Landesk, HP, CA are really not going to be afraid our coming... For the moment.
And perhaps it is a good idea, taking time to train ourself before ;-)
But we need to challenge the biggest one, how can we without a significative BUZZ from Symantec inside specialized ITIL press, group, news, etc... ?? No Partners can take this part, including Distributors like Distrilogie (in Europe) I do not feel they plan such. As a partner, we will do our best for ;-)
