Transferring encrypted harddrives to a new machine
Updated: 22 May 2010 | 3 comments
Hi
I was wondering if anyone knew what the process is for transferring a a harddisk to a new machine when the current one fails , is there key that needs to be transferred so the OS can recognise the disk
Also is this documented anywhere ?
Kind Regards

Hi James, You don't need to
Hi James,
You don't need to transfer any key to transfer the Hard disk from one machine to another. By the way are you trying to use two hard drives in one machine? If that is the case then you may not be able to recognize the file system if the drive is encrypted.
Every hard drive has its own WEK and transferring the drive from one machine to another will not cause any problem. Keep in mind that multiple drives in one machine are not supported yet. System can only recognize the primary drive as a main system partition. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Nitin Does that not mean
Hi Nitin
Does that not mean that if someone stole the laptop and placed it in a machine they would then be able to boot the machine ?
What protection is there against this ?

Hi James, They still need
Hi James,
They still need the password to by pass the Symantec Pre boot authentication windows. Also it is not possible to read the file system specifically for the encrypted drives. You can attached the hard drive as a secondary disk on any of the machine and boot the system, however if the drive if encrypted the user will see the drive type as “RAW”. They can only format the drive to use it as a secondary drive; however it is not possible to access the encrypted drive data by using it as a secondary hard drive on any of the system. Please let me know if you have any questions.
