    Hi,

In a previous job we had Altiris Deployment Server and found it was very useful.. I have since moved on and would like to demo it to my current place of employment but after the change of ownership from Altiris to Symantec I cant figure out what this software is now called.

I downloaded the Altiris Deployment Console software trialware from Symantec and it looks exactly like it used to.. but I get the feeling (when trying to add the inventory component) that I have downloaded something which is obsolete or etc..? The product I installed was Deployment Console v6.9 Build 496 SP5 MR1.

Is this an old version, and if so, can someone point me to the latest release of this product? If this is indeed the latest release, can someone explain how I add the inventory component to the trial server?

    Regards,

    Luke

    Hi Luke,

Arjain is correct for the 6.x line.  DS 7.1 is the current release.  Both are still completely supported (a lot of people do not wish to go to DS7.x just yet).  This is a completely different animal though and is tied directly into NS, whereas the 6.x line was standalone.

Thank you both for your responses.. I will stick with 6.X in that case for now.. In terms of what we used to be able to do, we had some sort of web based console which had a lot of reports and information about what sort of software was installed on each machine, how much of particular file types were installed on machines and etc.. but I cant find this in the web console (which seems to just be a web based deployment console).

Is this an add-on component for getting detailed information from each workstation (inventory manager or something)?

    Thank you,

    Luke

DS 7.1 is strictly reserved for us users with a LOT of hair to pull out and no ulcers. If you haven't got that much hair left, stick with DS 6.9 otherwise you will be bald by the time you've gotten 7.1 to work properly. I'm going on 5 months with DS 7.1. I I'm the outcast of my department for forcing upon them a buggy piece of software when they were used to a tried-and-true product which, for the most part, did what it was supposed to do when it was supposed to do it. You can't make that assumption with DS 7.1, even though it does have its advantages over DS 6.9. Many of us using DS 7.1 feel like we're using a release candidate product. If you can't afford to do that, WAIT.

This functionality is in the NS component.  You can install NS 7.1 on its own server, without fussing with the Deployment 7.1 components, in order to use the Symantec Management Agent and its plug-ins to gather inventory, run reports on installed software, deliver software, etc.  And when you're ready to move to DS 7.1, you'll already have the server in place necessary to do it.  In the meanwhile, keep 7.1 on one box and the DS 6.9 SP5 environment on another box.
