Trouble Backing up Exchange 2010 using ADBO and Dell Equallogic

Created: 12 Dec 2012 | 5 comments

We have the Dell autosnapshot manager installed (version 4) on our two Exchange 2010 SP2 mailbox servers that are configured in a DAG as well as the backup exec server.  I have downloaded and installed a trial of the Advanced Disk Based Backup Option.  I re-pushed the remote agent to the mailbox servers.

The backup server is connected to the SAN via ISCSI and the Exchange servers are as well, each database has it's own volume and I see the VSS volume is mounted on the mailbox servers and the backup server.  I'm able to snapshot the volumes using the Dell AutoSnapshot manager but backups fail using the ADBO with the following errors

Job ended: Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 8:22:07 PM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0x8004230e - 0x8004230e (2147754766)
Final error category: Other Errors
For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-32772-8974
 - ADBO: Offhost backup initialization failure on: "\\DAGNAME\Microsoft Information Store\Database".
V-79-10000-11225 - VSS Snapshot error. The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot provider that you selected does not support snap technology for this volume. Select another snapshot provider, and then run the job again.
The following volumes are dependent on resource: "D:" "M:" .
The snapshot provider used by VSS for volume D: - Dell EqualLogic VSS HW Provider (Version 4.0.0).
The snapshot provider used by VSS for volume M: - Dell EqualLogic VSS HW Provider (Version 4.0.0).
V-79-57344-34108 - An unexpected error occurred when cleaning up snapshot volumes. Confirm that all snapped volumes are correctly resynchronized with the original volumes.
Any advice?

It looks like the Dell hardware provider does not meet the requirements of ADBO.  See this document

You should disable the Dell provider and let BE use VSS instead.

that article only refers to the Hitachi provider not the Dell provider, I have no idea why you linked to that document.  The Dell Equallogic Series and their VSS providers are fully supported by Backup Exec 2010 for Offhost backup

You can see the list of supported hardware for ADBO here:

by using the standard VSS provider the backup traffic goes across our LAN instead of the SAN network which defeats the whole purpose of using ADBO and having our Exchange volumes directly on the SAN.  ADBO tells the Exchange server to Snapshot the databases on the SAN using the Equallogic VSS provider, then the BE server connects to the snapshot volume to pull it to tape, saving in our case a terabyte of data going across the LAN

I'm looking on advice on how to get it working!

All servers involved are 2008 R2, the mailbox servers are Enterprise edition, I need to confirm service pack levels for Windows match and I'm wondering if there is a Microsoft VSS patch mismatch.

Hi Brian,

Did you manage to figure out what the issue was? We're having the same problem but just trying to do basic ADBO backups of a LUN with the Dell 4.5 HIT Kit.

Hmm kind of going off topic slightly, but are the Exchange servers in the DAG using the same disk array (but different iSCSI LUNs/Volumes)?

Just wondering as one of the key functions in a DAG is to replicate information store copies to another location for resilience in the case of a disaster. If the host servers that make up your DAG are all storing their information stores on the same array then you instantly negate they key ability of a DAG. (i.e. if the array fails all of the DAG host servers are useless.)

Definintely off topic :) as I'm not trying to backup an Exchange server, just a physical host with an iSCSI LUN attached. Works from ASM but not from Backup Exec.
