Trying to understand Redirecting Exchagne 2003 storage group.

I have read many of the help topics in my Veritas 9.1 (with Exchange Component)
It is hard to sort out what you can and can't do depending on if you do a MB/Public B/U or storage group BU and if you are restoring to original location, RSG or Redirecting. Im making a chart with backup this to restore this etc. cause its so convoluted in the helps.

Anyway as I'm working my way along there is one Veritas help article that is titled "Redirecting Exchange 2000 and 2003 Storage Group and Database Restores"
One paragraph says,
***************************
Following are requirements for redirecting restores:
The storage groups and databases must already exist on the target server, and have the same names as the original storage groups or databases.
*************************

I have a couple of questions regarding this.  (by the way I understand that its talking about BUing up the (first) storage group, not individual MBs and public folders.)

1. How am I suppose to start with a system the same storage dbases, and names as the original if the whole point is that I'm trying to restore. I'm confused by this. Does this mean I have to create all the MB before I can restore. IM confused by this. It doesnt give alot of explanation.

2. What ever the answer is above what about Public folders does this method restore public foldters as well.

3. Perhaps more simple is what do you use a redirect restore for, if the server HW dies ??

Thanks.

Hi there, 1. I think what it

Hi there,

1. I think what it means is that if you have a storage group on your live server called StorageGroup1, you need to have the same name StorageGroup1 on your recover server. It doesn't mean you need to have manually recreated the same mailboxes...the restore will take care of that.

2. Not too sure about Public folders...haven't had to restore any of that, so I cannot comment.

3. A redirect restore is used if you want to restore data to another server for any reason. If the server HW dies, a normal restore would work to either that same, reinstalled server, or another server. I've done this, and can verify it works. We had a server die completely a couple of months ago, and did a normal restore of Exchange. Then followed Microsoft's pointers to get it running again!

Laters!

If you find this is a solution, please mark it as such.

Thanks thats a big document.

Thanks thats a big document.

Im glad to hear you have done it successfully. Its looks like a daunting task. If I may ask your process,
I would think that this would be the process.

1. Install windows 2003 to the same level as the original.
2. Install required backup software on the new exchange server
3. Backup first storage  group from original exchange (we only have one)
4. Install exchange software to same level as original
5. Take original exchange off line. unmount so that it will not run.
5. Restore exchange storage groups from backup with Veritas
6. Give it same ips as original.

Does that seem about right. IM reading through the ms document you sent but it will take a while.

Regards

Well, I restored the Exchange

Well, I restored the Exchange IS to disk by duplicating. With the entire server's data gone, I had to recatalog that tape.
Once done, the IS was mounted off that...I'll definitely find out and let you know...give me a few hours!
