  • 1.  Unable to access data on share after booting from Drive Mapping Boot Disk

    Posted Apr 11, 2007 07:59 PM
    Hi,

I created a drive mapping ghost boot disk, booting to a share on a Windows 2003 Server (\\SERVER\Ghost_Images) .  After booting with the ghost boot disk, and typing  the correct userid and password, the mapped drive appears.
When I cd to the mapped drive I:, and perform a "dir" command, I get "volume in drive I has no label" access denied.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    Hi,

Usually this happens due to default security policies in 2003 servers. In security options LanManager authentication level is set to 'NTLMv2 only' by default. But DOS does not support NTLMv2.

You can try changing the authentication level to accept NTLM.

However, note that this reduces the system security. Please check if this conforms to your organization's security policies before changing.

    Hello,

I have the same problem. I am using a DOS boot disk, that maps to an F:\ drive. The F:\ drive appears but when I try to access it I get "Volume in drive F has no label - Access denied".

I have tried changing the LAN Manager settings on the Server but this has not worked. Although I may not have done this correctly?

I am running this on an experimental network: There's only one DC (which is running Server 2003) and one PC on the network so security issues are not a problem, but I do need to try and get this sorted.

Could really do with some help!

    Many thanks,

    Hi Matt,

This should be the same issue with NTLM. However, if your machine (where the Share is) a domain member you need to change it from the doamin, since the domain security policy overrides the local security policy. Could you have a look at the domain security policy?

    Hi Krish,

    Thanks for your reply.

On my network I only have a single Domain Controller and a Desktop PC connected via a HP Procurve Switch. There are no Member Servers.

I have opened the Default Domain Controller Policy and have set 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level' to 'Send NTLM response only'. I have rebooted the Domain Controller so this setting can take affect.

My Domain Controller is called GHOST-SRV-1 and I have shared a folder as 'GhstImgs'. I have given full permissions to admin, Administrators, Anonymous Logon and Everyone.

My Domain Controller can successfully ping the Desktop PC once it has booted, and the F:\ drive says it has mapped ok. I type F:\ and the DOS prompt changes to the F:\ drive but when I type DIR I still get the error message "Volume in dive F has no label - Access denied".

On my 'real network' I have no trouble in mapping a drive letter to a share on any of my servers, so I am puzzle why this will not work on my experimental network. The thing is I'm getting all new servers - in fact a whole new network in July and I need to make sure that I can get this to work before proceeding.

    Your help is appreciated.

    Best wishes,

    Hi Matt,

If I remember correct, 2003 Domain Controllers will not allow you to connect to the share from DOS. It was a while I was trying it out, but Domain Controller is a special case. If you use another 2003 machine, you will be able to map the share in DOS.

Is it critical for your work to map the share to the DC?

    Hi Krish,

I hadn't thought about that; the servers I map to on my 'real' network are all member servers. I'll dig out another computer, add it to my expermental network, create a share on it and try mapping to that. I will do that on Monday and let you know how it goes!

    Have a good weekend!

    Thanks again,

    Matt,

I did verify that you can map a drive through DOS to a non Windows 2003 Domain Controller.

Krish, Thanks for all your Help!!!!!
