  • 1.  Unable to add network driver to WinPE 2.1 Boot Image on DS 6.9 SP1

    Posted Feb 02, 2010 09:30 AM
We recently changed our standard desktop model to the HP Compaq 6000 Pro SFF. I tried to get one of these new pc's to PXE boot for image deployment, received the "retrying DHCP" message, and knew I had to update our WinPE Boot Image to include the new driver.

I downloaded the driver from HP, extracted it, then went through the Altiris Boot Disk Creator Wizard to edit our current boot image. I get into step two, click the "have disk" button to add the driver, browse for the driver I have just extracted, it properly shows me the list of drivers to be installed from the .inf file I have selected.  I click ok, and there is a short delay while it appears that the driver is being added. However, the number of device drivers stays at the 1256 it was prior to performing this step. When I uncheck the "auto detect all device drivers" box, and browse the driver files, I do not see my driver listed there. This box is checked for the purposes of our WinPE image.

I have tried to just go ahead and save this image, but of course it does not work.

I have not had to do this in over a year, which was also the first and only time I was shown how to do this. Am I missing any steps here?

Any assistance/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

What version of the driver did you add? Since it's WinPE 2.1, make sure you're adding the Vista version of the network drivers.

    Dear Fellow Altiris DS User,

I too had the same issue you are reporting and I was able to solve by using the following instructions:

Altiris Deployment Server v6.9SP1 has a bug that prevents you from being able to add WinPE Drivers successfully.

    SOLUTION

1 - Download and install Altiris MP1 (Maintenance Pack 1), which would correct the bug detailed above – List of bugfixes on: https://kb.altiris.com/display/1n/index.asp?c=&cpc=&cid=&cat=&catURL=&r=0.1586573
2 – Download and EXTRACT (do not install) Windows Vista Drivers for nic needed. (WAIK 2.1 used on the Altiris v6.9SP1 installation requires Vista drivers. If using WAIK 1.6, use Windows XP Drivers)

3 – Open the PXE Configuration Utility on the Altiris Server and create a new Boot Option which should be named accordingly.
    ·         Use WinPE as the Boot OS Option
    ·         Choose x86 as the Processor Options (choosing only x86 will speed up your boot creator, since you’ll not be creating three different boot options for x86, x64 and ia64)
    ·         Use Boot Disk Creator to edit your boot image

4 – When editing the Boot Disk, use the “Have Disk” option to look for the proper drivers extracted earlier. The file to be selected is the *.sys, placed under the extracted drivers folder.

5 – Proceed with boot creation with all default options and, when finished, select the recently created boot option as default.

PS: THIS PROCESS WILL NOT WORK IF MAINTENANCE PACK 1 IS NOT INSTALLED.

Have a great ALTIRIS IMAGING day!

    Alex

The Maintenance Pack did the trick. We are off and imaging now. Thank you very much for everyone's help.
