  • 1.  unable to backup windows 7 machine

    Posted Dec 29, 2010 06:13 AM

I recently added a new PC with windows 7 to the network.

Remote install worked fine as did an inventory update task

However, when I try to run a backup it GSS version (11.5.1.2266) fails to backup.

The windows 7 machine reboots and then gives me the message that it is working and if you need to logon click the logon button.

after a while (5-10) mins it reboots itself and goes to the regular logon screen, and I get a failed warning in GSS.

    The event log shows:

    wake on lan - success

    updating pre-os - success

    changing logon settings - success

    to target OS - success

    create incremental snapshot - success

    change logon setting - success

    to virtual partition - FAIL

    any ideas???

What is the partition setup of the new machine?  Is there a manufacturer's service partition present as well as the usual Windows 7 partitions?  Are your other Windows 7 machines differently configured in terms of their partition layout?

If I recall correctly, GSS cannot handle "non standard" partition configurations as it cannot then find the virtual partition.

there are no other partitions other than the win7 partition

currently i have not upgraded any other win7 machines (and not likely to if I cannot get this issue fixed!)

    thanks

Is this machine using different hardware to any machines you are currently working with.

Is WinPE your boot environment?  You may have to add SATA drivers if your hard disk uses a different SATA chipset to any currently supported.  As a small test, you could try setting the BIOS to compatibility mode so that the hard disk looks like an IDE/PATA device and see if that makes any difference.

if you click on the log entry for failed to virtual partion it should have some option to get more information about this step that was failed.   I don't have any failed logs to look at on my server now but I know in the past you can drill down further to see what is happening at this step.

If you can't find this let us know I can always force a fail and then get you better steps to drill down.  Once you have this info you can address that particular issue.

    cheers.

winpe is the boot environment for all the machines, there are 2 other options WinPE ??? and PCDOS.

I tried uninstaling the GSS client which was successful but when I now try a remote install I get an error of 'credentials conflict' regardless of what username and password I use

Is the machine still present in the GSS Server inventory? That might be the reason for a credentials conflict.

What about the hardware aspects?  If WinPE cannot access the hardware in the new machine, specifically the hard disk, then any imaging task is going to fail.
