Unable to browse the Internet at SEP installation

  • 1.  Unable to browse the Internet at SEP installation

    Posted Aug 29, 2010 01:57 PM
I have installed a new Endpoint Protection management server.  I build a policy and deployment package for the client installs.  I installed the client on the SEP management server as my first test.  It appears that everything is okay for the most part (client is in the correct group, the features are what I wanted, etc.).  However, when I open Internet Explorer, I can not browse to any websites.  I can ping the Internet by name and IP address, so DNS and ICMP is working.  However, the browser won't display any pages.

I am thinking it is either the Intrusion Protection policy or the Firewall policy that is blocking it.  The Firewall policy is pretty much the default as the only modification I have made was to allow RDP / TCP 3389 to the group.  Aside from that, I can't find anything that would keep IE 8 from working correctly.

    Any suggestions?  Thank you!

I disabled Network Threat Protection, but IE still was not able to access webpages.

    I stopped the following services:

    Symantec Embedded Database
    Symantec Endpoint Protection
    Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager
    Symantec Even Manager

I STILL could not browse the Internet.  I am about to totally uninstall the SEP Management server and start over.  Something is not right.  Any further ideas before I go down this path?

    Thanks!

Right click on the SEP icon and click on disable symantec endpoint protection and see whether you are able to browse?

Instead of  uninstalling  SEPM , uninstall SEP client, and then see, if you are able to connect  to internet.  SEPM would not  block internet connection. If anything, it could  be  SEP. If you are not able to  connect, even with SEP uninstalled, then it could  be  sonmething else, at your  end.

If IE is not working even after disabling services and NTP..I dont think Problem lies with SEP
If it doesn't work even after removing SEP then definitely its not related to EP but some other internet connectivity issue.

Can you tell us the results when you try to browse through a different browser?

Also, please use wireshark and see if any network traffic is generated when you post a web pagte in IE. If it does not, then its an application issue for sure.

Please clear internet cache as well, just for being ona safer side.

I came across this same problem after a machine was infected with Harakit virus. The threat was removed by SEP but there was no internet connectivty. Ping, Tracert and Telnet to all websites were working. Internet connectivity was there for other browsers, but not for IE.
