unable to configure Out of Office Assistant - Changes to the Rule cannot be saved
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 1 comment
When we have Symantec MailSeurity for Exchange running on our Exchange servers, none of the users are able to set themselves to Out Of Office. Whenever they try in Outlook 2003 they get the following error dialog: "Your AutoReply message could not be displayed. The client operation failed." They are also unsuccessful on setting it via OWA. However if we stop and disable the service(s) for Symantec Mail Security for Exchange, then the problems go away and they are able to use Out Of Office. Does anyone know what is causing this problem to occur, and how we might fix it that would still allow us to use SMSME?
We are running MS Exchange 2003 Enterprise with SMSME v5 on a Windows 2003 server.

I realized that the problem is being caused by a content filtering rule that we have enabled. We have a content filter setup to scan the subject line of all messages that are internal, scanning to ensure that certain tags are used on all emails matched against a literal "Match List", if any message is found that does not contain something from the match list it is deleted, as set in the actions. It looks like I need to replace this rule with a rule that perhaps has exclusions which would allow the Out Of Office messages to be deleted. Does anyone have any idea how I could do this? I'm guessing that I would have to use the regular expressions, but if I do this can I pass in Match Lists or variables such as %localtion%, %subject% or %sender%?
