This issue has been solved. See solution.

I am unable to encapsulate a root disk unser Volume Manager
5.0,REV=05.11.2006.17.55. I get the following error:

VxVM ERROR V-5-2-338
The encapsulation operation failed with the following error:
VxVM vxencap ERROR V-5-2-213
It is not possible to encapsulate disk_0, for the following reason:

I have install Storage Foundation on a newly installed Solaris 10
system. The version of Solaris 10 is 5/09 s10s_u7wos_08. I also
installed the recommended patch cluster form May of '09 before
installing Storage Foundation. I've followed the directions from the
Volume Manager Admin Guide. Here is the output of prtvtoc:

* /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 partition map

* Dimensions:
* 512 bytes/sector
* 424 sectors/track
* 24 tracks/cylinder
* 10176 sectors/cylinder
* 14089 cylinders
* 14087 accessible cylinders

* 10: read-only

Here's the output from format's partition menu.

Current partition table (original):

I saw another post that indicated that installing an older version,
then encapsulating, then installing the newer version
worked. Unfortunately, an older version of the software is not
available to me.

Thanks,
Dano

Oops, looks like the error message needs to have the angle brackets
removed before quoting.

VxVM ERROR V-5-2-338
The encapsulation operation failed with the following error:
VxVM vxencap ERROR V-5-2-213
It is not possible to encapsulate disk_0, for the following reason:
VxVM vxslicer ERROR V-5-1-5964 Unsupported disk layout.
Encapsulation requires atleast 0 sectors of unused
space either at the beginning or end of the disk
drive.

Sorry that document specified a different error numer. I did check the vfstab and it is the one created from a clean install of the system, so no extraneous characters or duplicate lines. Good try, though.

Well I was able to get a support id and call this problem in and it turns out that the problem was with the name of the boot disk as seen by the Volume Manager, disk_0. The tech had me change the naming scheme back to "osn" and then try the encapsulation and it worked.
