Unable to Install CMS 7.1 SP2 successfully

  • 1.  Unable to Install CMS 7.1 SP2 successfully

    Posted Nov 10, 2013 11:57 PM

    Hello,

    In my test environment,

    1. While installing Altiris CMS 7.1 SP2 MP1 I got attached error message stating that Database configuration has failed. It is an Off Box SQL and have confirmed the remote connections to DB are open, DB is pinging froM SMP and vice a versa.

Is there something I might have missed while setting up the DB or in the installation process.

    2. Also, after the completion, I got a message that some components are not installed. Attached is the list for reference. How would I go by installing the missing components? Is it just by getting in the Installs folder under SIM and run the executables or there is any other way to do that?

    3. Upon relauncing SIM, I see some products installed however, against CMS I see a message that it has not been configured properly and need to be reconfigured. I tried doing that however, that as well failed.

Also, I dont see SMC listed in program files, if I am correct, it is due to the configuration failure

Test Environment details are as below:
    Win Server 2008 R2 Std
    SQL Server 2008 (off box)

    Please advise.

    Thanks and Regards,
    snm1502

The account that you're using to install CMS needs to be a dbowner of the database on the SQL box.  If it's not, you get an error.

    Hello etk1131,

    Thanks for the reply.

If I remember correct, I had the account set as dbowner, however, I will certainly double check and trying reinstalling CMS.

Would be great, if you would be able to please guide on points 2 and 3 as well.

    Thanks again.

    Hi snm1502,

I believe that if the account is not set as the dbowner (and as I'm writing, I think it needs dbcreator as well), all of your issues can be attributed to this.

Let me know how it goes!

    Hello Etk1131,

    Thanks for the reply.

Account being used is set to dbcreator and it proceeded with the installation. However, then returned another error regarding failing to configure services. Attached for reference.

Would be great if you could please guide further on this.

    Thanks again.

It looks like it's having an issue setting the Application Identity.  Your service account has both dbowner and dbcreator rights on your off-box SQL, correct?  Also, it should have admin rights on your CMS box (at least that's how I always do my installs).  Everything that's in your screenshot appears to be account-related, so these are my best guesses here. :)

    Hello Etk,

I dont have dbowner, however, it has dbcreator which is added to the service account. Also, service account (used to install CMS and SIM is launched) has admin rights on CMS box. Have verified that it is added to the Administrators group.

Would there be anything else I could check?

    Thanks

    Hi Snm,

Your service account definitely needs db_owner privs:  (https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/what-are-minimum-recommended-db-privs-smp71-db-credentials).

Since everything appears to be account-driven in your screenshot, that's what I recommend adding.  My service account is also an admin on my SQL box, but that is probably overkill.

    Hi SNM,

I also experienced this kind of error while installing. Our fixed in this issue is below.

    1. We used and Logged In Service Account with Admin Rights in the server you will install the CMS.

    2. On the off-box SQL server, the SA account was have db_owner, db_securityadmin, db_datawriter, db_datareader level roles.

    3. Install the CMS in your server then used the configured SA account in Database Tab of CMS installation.

If you're having this kind of issue, your Database Admin who is managing your SQL server can help you with this. When we got this error, we seek and ask for help then we resolves this issue.

Please tell me if this helps resolving your issue. Thank you.

    Regards,

    JM

    Hello All,

Apologies for a much delayed reply. However, I was stuck in some things due to which couldnt work on my lab.

    Etk1131,
I followed the article provided by you and designated Service Account (Test\SA_Altiris) that is being used for complete Altiris installation as db_owner (as mentioned in the article), however, that did not succeeded and returned same error.

    JM,
Upon failing on above step, I created a new user in DB and mapped it to use SA_Altiris as Login Name and provided it with mentioned 4 roles. That also did not work. As I am on a Test Environment, there is no dedicated DB Owner.

Kindly let me know what could be checked further.

    Hi,

Please copy/paste "spIsHierarchyManagedItem1" stored procedure definition (from the DB you are trying to install with) and attach content of "%ProgramData%\Symantec\SMP\DAL" folder from problematic NS Server?

    Hello Robert,

Thanks for the reply. However, I have now created a new VM and redownloaded SIM (latest version). In the product listing I have ensure to select Altiris Client Management Suite 7.1 SP2b. It is currently downloading the setup files.

I will try installing CMS this time and post back the results.

Also, I still have old VM in back up.. Will get you the requested info from that as well if it fails.

    Hello All,

Finally, my attempt of a clean install of Altiris CMS 7.1 SP2b was sucessful with an on box SQL.

I have restarted the installation of Altiris CMS 7.1 SP2b on another test environment with an off box SQL.

Hoping for that as well to complete successfully. Will post back the results.
