Unable to install OWA 2003 extensions on Exchange 2003 back-end servers. Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP2

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi,

I have installed Enterprise Vault successfully into a two node active/passive Microsoft cluster. I installed the OWA 2003 extensions on the Exchange 2003 front end servers with no problems either.

Then we get to the back end servers and the good times come to a screeching halt.

We have a three node active/active/passive cluster. Each of the active nodes have an Exchange Virtual Server handling half of our users.

Regardless of my trying the install on the active or passive servers, I get the following error.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10005
Date:  11/12/2009
Time:  11:19:47 AM
User:  mydomain\domain admininstrator account
Computer: exchangeservername
Description:
Product: Symantec Enterprise Vault OWA 2003 Extensions -- Error 25700. Could not determine Exchange server role. The install cannot continue.

NOTE:  This error can indicate that the global catalog could not be accessed.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Data:

We have three Active Directory controllers all configured as global catalog servers. We excluded the AD controller with the PDC FSMO role from being accessed by Exchange.

This is my last stumbling block to going on-line with Vault, and would really like to get it resolved.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Dave

What are the names of your cluster nodes?
What is the network name in your cluster group? (the one containing the quorum resource)
What is the network name of your Exchange Virtual Server in your Exchange cluster group?

Thanks Rob

This one had me pulling out my hair (both of them) for some time. Darned if I know why we didn't use a DNS alias instead of the cluster network name resource, then again, why does the installer care as long as it finds a valid entry.

Ah well, it is working and you have my thanks.

To follow

To follow up................

To follow-up I've filed a bug report to try to get this bit of the process done slighly differently in the future.  Discussions taking place now about it, but hopefully this will be better in 8 SP 4.

Thanks
